The sections include pregnancy, parturition and childbed, posture in labour (including standing sitting, squatting, kneeling, etc.), management of the afterbirth, massage, expression and other external manipulation and characteristic labour scenes in East Asia, Africa south of the Sahara and North America. The development of the obstetric chair is also discussed. George Julius Engelmann (1847-1903) was a US obstetrician and gynaecologist who studied in Europe before returning to his home city of St Louis in 1873 becoming Professor of Obstetrics.
