FIRST EDITION, vignette to title-page (repeating dustjacket illustration, signed 'Nichols'), pp. 256, crown 8vo, original brown cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt, faint waterstain at foot of cloth (evident also to pastedowns), bottom corners slightly bumped, dustjacket chipped and nicked with browned backstrip panel, sliver of blue staining at foot of rear panel, split to bottom half of lower joint-fold, good. Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf, in the year of publication: 'With very best wishes from the author, Doris Lessing, April 26. 1951'. Her second book, and first collection of stories, all with a South African setting.
