w. p. Eine Ecke bestoßen, sonst gut und ohne Anstreichungen / One corner bumped, otherwise good and without markings. - We may all decry prejudice, but in truth we are all prejudicedit is an element of who we are as human beings. In another International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) pamphlet We All Have Prejudices. But, Why? Henri Parens provides a comprehensive review of what causes our prejudices and how they can remain benign, become hostile or even malignant. In this pamphlet my focus is not on pairs of individualized sameness and difference, such as black and white, female and male, gay and straight, rich and poor, but rather on us and them. It describes situations when tens, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of people share the same, or similar prejudice against another large group. This kind of large-group prejudice can also be benign, hostile, or malignant. Observing "us-and-them" sentiments in the international arena My knowledge about the kind of prejudice shared by whole populations of people comes from my decades-long work as a psychoanalyst in international affairs. From 1979 to the early 2000s, I chaired an interdisciplinary facilitating team from the University of Virginia that brought together influential representatives from countries that thought of each other as "enemies" Arabs and Israelis, Americans and Soviets, Russians and Estonians, Croats and Serbians, Georgians and South Ossetians, and Turks and Greeksfor a series of unofficial diplomatic dialogues that spanned many years. While on- location in troubled areas of the world, I also worked in several refugee camps. Since 2007,1 have co-chaired the International Dialogue Initiative (IDI), a private, international, multidisciplinary group comprised of psychoanalysts, academics, diplomats, and other professionals, who meet biannually to examine large-group differences, and the emotionally charged perception of those differences. The Initiative is aimed at facilitating a process of deepening discussion between representatives from various cultures and places such as Arab Emirates, Germany, Great Britain, India, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Northern Ireland, Russia, Turkey, United States, and the West Bank (excerpt from introduction).
