A scarce learning tool, meant to lay the foundation for drawing above all else, but also incidentally spelling and handwriting. None listed on OCLC First Search, but we believe the American Antiquarian Society does have a copy. Two patent dates given: March 2, 1874, and March 5, 1875. (It is surprising to us that this novelty learning tool would be eligible for a patent; we don't know what tinker served as the basis for the patent.) In a box measuring 25 by 18 cm, and 3 cm deep. Two roller pins jut out 2.5 cm. Basically the scroll has seven sections, a picture in each, with the name of what is being shown rendered in capital letters, small letters and cursive -- excepting the alphabet piece, of course. Images are of a cow, a deer, a horse, the alphabet, all decorative capital letters, small letters, and numbers 0 to 9, fruit, lambs, and goats. The illustrations and captions are about 10 cm a piece, with a good amount of space between the pieces. Condition-wise, the box is structurally sturdy and completely functional. The paste down label on the back of the box has some blistering and stains. The wood of the box has a few scratches and light stains, but all that adds up to a trivial cavil. The scroll within has some roughness to its edges -- unwanted deckling, one might think of it -- and a few short closed tears, none of which comes close to the imagery, and doesn't meaningfully compromise the object.
