Title page vignette. Wanting the half title. All edges with a red wash. In three parts. The dedication dated: May 10, 1793. Blank leaf between p. vi and p. Contents very clean and bright. P. 241 - 249 incl. gives " A list of the the ecclesiastics massacred at the Carmes, Abbey, Seminary of St. Firmin, and La Force on the first days of September, 1792." Contemporary half skiver, lightly rubbed, over marbled paper backed boards. Overall a very good copy. Augustin Barruel ( 1741-1820 ), a French Jesuit Priest, and controversialist. To escape the horrors of the French Revolution Barruel fled to England about 1791 where he became almoner to the refugee Prince of Conti. In 1793 he wrote the Histoire du Clergé dur la Revolution Française ( "History of the Clergy during the French Revolution" ). The book is dedicated to the English nation in recognition of the enormous hospitality showed toward the persecuted French ecclesiastics during the Revolution. However he is probably best remembered for his book - Memoirs, illustrating the history of Jacobinism, London. [ 1797 ] - 98, in which he strongly suggests the French Revolution was planned and put into practise by secret societies. ESTC T80488. Codice articolo 5546
