First edition. Signed by the author. Hardcover. Original light blue linen cloth, spine and front panel lettered in gilt. Spine and top edge of back panel a bit faded (but gilt lettering still strong), a few spots of foxing on the endpapers, o/w very good in an added archival jacket for this copy. A wonderfully erudite and entertaining foray into the importance of literary references, both to the works intrinsically and to the reader's appreciation of them. Signed by the author on the half-title page, and in addition there are two pertinent quotations written by him on the title-page.
