A very smart, and uncommon, abridged, complete single volume edition, of John Jamieson's important work on the language of Scotland. Jamieson's Scottish Dictionary; An Etymological Dictionary of The Scottish Language; In Which the Words are Explained in Their Different Senses, Authorised by the Names of the Writers by Whom they are Used, or the Titles of the Works in Which they Occur, and Abridged from the Quarto Edition, by the Author, John Jamieson, D.D. Printed for Archibald Constable and Company, and Alexander Jameson, Edinburgh by Abernethy and Walker, 1818. First edition, thus. A very good, almost near fine, volume bound with calf leather spine and corners. With raised bands, and black morocco title label with gilt. With marbled paper over boards. A later binding, but not that recent. With matching marbled endpapers, and gilt top edge. Soundly bound. The text pages are generally bright and clean throughout, with some light spotting to endpapers and scattered spotting commensurate with age - mainly marginal. A handsome volume. Text in English / Scots. Unnumbered pages, but complete. Dimensions: approximately 230mm high x 153mm wide x 34mm deep. Weight approximately 811g (unpacked). More photos on request.
