The literary taste of the time, the confused textual transmission, the absence of dates, obscurities about facts which were familiar to the correspondents -- all make such work a delicate business. Peter the Venerable's letters, like those of St. Anselm, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, John of Salisbury, and Peter of Blois, have been in print for centuries but they can only be used with confidence by historians after scientific and sensitive re-editing. Professor Constable has risen to the occasion with an admirable edition. . He publishes 193 letters (including a few from Peter's correspondents) found in medieval collections and in the Paris printed edition of 1522' (C. R.
