First edition. This story collection contains the mythology of Middle-earth, hinted at but not fully explored in The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-55). Tolkien worked on these stories intermittently between the First World War and his death in 1973, after which his son Christopher gathered and published them here. This copy is from the export issue, printed by William Clowes, which does not feature the price on the dust jacket. A domestic issue, printed by Billing & Sons, was published simultaneously. Hammond & Anderson A15a. Octavo. Map of the Realms of the Noldor and the Sindar, folding map of Beleriand and the Lands to the North at end, both by Christopher Tolkien and printed in red and black. Original blue boards, spine lettered in gilt and stamped with heraldic device of Lúthien Tinúviel after a drawing by Tolkien. With dust jacket. Fading to upper cloth edges, ghosting from jacket to spine, mild foxing to fore edge; jacket unclipped, spine a little faded, else bright, slight creases: a very good copy in like jacket.
