Fils de Sauveur Morand, auteur de découvertes nouvelles techniques de la taille sus-pubienne, Jean François Clément doit surtout sa célébrité à cet ouvrage, qui immortalise le cas de la « femme Supiot », victime d'un ramollissement général des os. In-8, pleine basane de l'époque, dos à nerf orné. 112 pp., 1 f. n. ch. d'approbation, 1 planche dépliante frontispice hors-texte. Morand fut un pionnier de la neurochirurgie, rapportant plusieurs observations dont une intervention réussie sur un abcès temporo-sphénoïdal (T.I, pp. 161-168). "It was one of the first, if not the earliest example of a completely successful operation for abscess in the substance of the brain." (Walker). Morand s'intéressa beaucoup à l' intervention de la taille. Il avait déjà fait paraître un traité sur ce sujet en 1728 et fit un séjour en Angleterre en 1729, pour apprendre auprès de Cheselden la taille de la pierre par l appareil latéral. Morand adapta ensuite la méthode de Cheselden en la simplifiant. Il fut le premier en France à pratiquer de façon délibérée une taille hypogastrique, parfaitement décrite, mais qui ne retint pas la faveur de ses contemporains. Elle sera remise en honneur par Jean Baseilhac (Frère Côme) dans la seconde moitié du siècle. Morand rapporte qu'il adopta le principe (déjà mis en pratique par Abulcasis) d'opérer le malade en position déclive, 150 ans avant Trendelenbourg, qui laissa son nom à cette position. Par ailleurs Morand rapporte l'observation célèbre (préalablement publiée dans les Mémoires de l'Académie royale des sciences) de la femme Supiot, atteinte d'ostéomalacie. Sauveur François Morand (1697-1773), né à Paris, devint comme son père chirurgien. Il fut l'un des chirurgiens les plus novateurs de son époque. Il fut censeur royal et chirurgien en chef de l'hôpital de la Charité, puis chirurgien en chef de l'Hôtel des Invalides. Il a laissé son nom à une structure du cerveau : ergot de Morand (décrite dans Mém. Acad. Sci., 1744). Splendid map, historically described as the second decauche printing of the map of De L'Isle and the first state in which the United States is named and the name United States (Etats-Unis) appears earliest on a printed map. It is worth noting that there are two different states of this 1783 "Etats Unis" map. The second has the crown at the top of the cartouche and the royal fleur-de-lis below it, as well as the words "du Roi" removed from the title, suggesting a change to the copper plate by Dezauche after the French Revolution and most likely during the First French Republic (1792-1795), inspired in part by the American Revolution. Curiously, the notation "avec privilege du Roy" at the bottom of the cartouche remains unchanged. Equally noteworthy, the map contains one of the earliest references to the Rocky Mountains, the "Riviere Longue," and other features in the west, based on the reports of Louis Armand de Lom d'Arce, Baron de Lahontan. Lahontan traveled extensively in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the upper Mississippi Valley. Louis-Armand de Lom d'Arce (1666 - 1716), also known as Baron de Lahontan, was a French officer and traveler in the French colonies of North America. During his time in New France, he visited every nook and cranny, probably visited hitherto little explored areas around the Mississippi River, twice participated in the successful defense of English attacks. On the other hand, he left no major mark on the New World. Except for his last stay at Placentia, he was hardly mentioned in official correspondence. But with his works published in his later years, based on his diary and notes, he brought North America to Europe and became one of the most widely read authors in the first half of the 18th century.…
