[Letter of Attorney to Receive Conviction Money, Buckinghamshire, England, April 17, 1740]. 11-1/2" x 7-1/2" (27.94 x 11.43 cm) bifolium, text in neat hand to recto of first leaf, docketed on… lower half of second leaf, four tax stamps, three embossed, one in ink to head of first leaf, wax seal next to Selby's signature. Moderate toning, light soiling, horizontal fold lines, negligible light rubbing to edges, upper inside corners torn away with loss to tax inkstamp. A well-preserved item. $450. * Selby of Wavendon and Whaddon in Buckinghamshire, the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, submitted this letter for his expenses in the pursuit and capture of John Brewer and Jeremiah Weatherly, who were convicted for felony, burglary and the theft of goods valued below ?120. He took up the post in 1739. Educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, he was said to be, toward the end of his life, "a very shy and reserved man, given up to fox-hunting," and in possession of a "large Estate." * Selby, the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, submitted this letter for his expenses in the pursuit and capture of John Brewer and Jeremiah Weatherly, who were convicted for felony, burglary and the theft of goods valued below ?120.
