Condizione: Good. - A 17 inch high by 22-3/4 inch wide sheet of paper has been folded in half & then folded 2 additional times to form a document 8-1/2 inches high by 4 inches wide. The printed document is filled in in ink by an agent and signed "Willard Ives" beside his printed title "President". Illustrated with an engraving of the fire insurance company's building. There is some staining and light soiling to the document & 1 corner is creased. There is a crease with short tears to the right edge & a tear & chip along the first fold. Good. Though he liked best to be known as a farmer and owned Hillcrest Farm in Watertown for 48 years, Willard Ives [1806-1896] was a noted and active participant in the life of Jefferson County and beyond. He was a leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church, was a delegate to the world convention of Methodists held in London in 1846, and served as President of Ives Seminary in Antwerp, NY. In addition to his presidency of the fire insurance company, he was a director of the Bank of Watertown, a founder and second president of the Jefferson County Orphan Asylum and president of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society in 1848. He was one of the organizers of Syracuse University and represented his district in Congress as a Democrat from 1851-53.

1st Edition. iv, 214; [2], 171, [1 (blank)]; lxxii, [2 (blank)] pp. Couple illustrations, at least one lithograph by W[alter]. [Hood] Fitch (1817-1892). 8-3/4" x 5-1/4" Walter Fitch was a botanical illustrator from Scotland. Fitch's illustration have appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, most publications issued by Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, George Bentham's 'Handbook of the British Flora', James Bateman's "A Monograph of Odontoglossum" and William Hooker's "A century of Orchidaceous Plants". "Fitch was made a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1857." [wiki]. The previous owner inscription reads "Skipper Kent 1953". Skipper Kent was a restauranteur in the San Francisco Bay Area, owning Zombie Village in Oakland and Skipper Kent's in San Francisco. These "tiki" inspired restaurants were his pride and joy as he was already and avid collector of Polynesian art and artifacts. Kent was also an avid orchid collector, so we suspect this was in his library at one time, with his interest in botany. The embossed library stamp comes from the library of Herman Knoche (1870-1945). Knoche was born in San Jose, California and studied botany at Stanford University. He moved to France to further his studies at University of Montpellier; his particular interest was island vegetation. Boards and edges are rubbed/(scuffed), some tears to the paper wrapped boards, some soiling to boards and back strip, some fraying to back strip, blue ink inscription to ffep - possible previous signature, some soiling to end papers (particularly to fore-edge), embossed library stamp to head of title page, age toning to leaves, water damage to fore-edge of leaves and boards, water damage particularly bad at tail of boards and leaves -going towards middle of leaves, binding a bit tender, some gatherings are loose or torn. A Good copy. Period binding, black ink stain to all edges.

Aggiungi al carrello8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. With autograph address. To the lawyer and politician Adolphe Crémieux (1796-1880) concerning an upcoming concert together with the mezzo-soprano Émilie Emma Courtot in Bourgueil near Tours. Crémieux apparently planned the concert when he was deputy for the department Indre-et-Loire (1842-51). - After a bumpy start of his singing career in Paris, Gilbert Duprez went to Italy in 1828, where he adopted the contemporary "tenore contraltino" register and soon built a strong reputation. In the Italian premiere of Rossini's "Guglielmo Tell" in 1831, Duprez pioneered the operatic high C sung from the chest, instead of the somewhat weaker falsettone register that was costumary until then. His greatest success in Italy was the creation of the role of Edgardo in the 1835 premiere of Donizzeti's "Lucia di Lammermoor". His Italian reputation firmly established, Duprez returned to Paris in 1836 and scored an immediate success at the Paris Opera with his new style of vocal delivery. Important premieres such as Berlioz's "Benvenuto Cellini" (1838), Donizetti's "La favorite" (1840), and Verdi's "Jérusalem" (1847) followed. However, Duprez's vocal style exceeded his physical resources. His singing began to deteriorate as early as 1838, and he was forced to retire from the stage completely in 1851, turning to teaching. Duprez's innovative style gave rise to the 19th century "tenore de forza", heralding the "dramatic tenor" range and style of today. - On stationery with embossed monogram. With traces of former mounting. Minor foxing and browning.
