i-vi, 7-158 pages. Hardcover: H 16.25cm x L 10.5cm. Original blue cloth rubbed with some staining; board corners bumped and worn; slight cloth loss at frayed spine ends; spine's gilt stamping has flaking/rubbing losses but lettering is still legible. Toning and several small stains to edges; varied foxing throughout as well as a few scattered stains; a few pencil marks amongst text; past owner's three-line inscription "Thos. H. Jaco | Longtown | Miss" utilizing regular pencil writing and color pencil decoration on front flyleaf. Tearing to surface paper along front hinge causing some slightly pliability but binding otherwise remains fairly firm. A good+ copy. With b/w frontispiece illustration plus three b/w plates (between 58-59, 84-85, and 120-121) all on unpaged leaves, Editor's Preface, and an Introduction. Contents succinctly summarized within the Introduction as "intended to adduce some instances of remarkable escapes from peril, which may tend to give a more vivid and distinct appreciation of out constant dependence on the providence of God." No author or publishing date specified but the Library of Congress online catalog attributes authorship to Methodist theologian Thomas Osmond Summers (1812-1882) and with their copy dated 1856. OCLC also cites an 1859 Nashville imprint. However, this copy's binding seems more contemporary to the 1870s-1880s which also seems more apropos for the employment span of J.D. Barbee [James D. Barbee, 1832-1906] as a publisher's agent. OCLC cites several books with the same title published in London by the Religious Tract Society but it is unclear whether this particular book is derivative of those as Summers "borrowed" heavily from other works in his prolific publishing career. Editor of the weekly newspaper Nashville Christian Advocate, Thomas O. Summers edited/authored innumerable books on behalf of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Ronald R. Allen's TENNESSEE IMPRINTS 1791-1875 cites Summers as the author of only seven books but the total is far higher - quite likely in excess of fifty with most being anonymous moral-theological tracts such as REMARKABLE ESCAPES FROM PERIL and perhaps the most historically notable being "The Confederate States Almanac for the Year of Our Lord 1862." Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller. {Antiq_Shelf #2}.

Past owner's antiquarian ink signature and personal book number on front free endpaper; same owner's pencil signature at top margin of page 121 and on rear pastedown; antiquarian ink writing on frontispiece's blank recto and upon title page; some foxing and toning throughout; a few pages corners creased; moisture staining towards rear leaves; rear free endpaper also creased. Binding is firm. A good+ copy. Thomas O. Summers was editor of the weekly newspaper Nashville Christian Advocate. OCLC does not cite any copies of this 1855 edition among member institutions although OCLC does cite 1854 and 1870 editions published in Richmond, Virginia (J. Early) and Nashville, Tennessee (Publishing House of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South) respectively with both having 144 pages as well and Summers as editor. Neither this 1855 edition nor its 1870 compatriot are cited by Ronald R. Allen in his bibliographical reference TENNESSEE IMPRINTS 1791-1875. So evidently this 1855 edition is a scarce if not rare antebellum Nashville, Tennessee imprint. OCLC cites London editions (without Summers involvement) for 1839, 1840, and 1842.

87 pages. Hardcover: H 15.75cm x L 10cm. Original dark brown cloth boards marred by patches of surface chipping and slender wear along edges; spine's surface cloth mostly perished with recessed losses into front and rear joints and underlying paper backstrip exposed lengthwise, shallow chipping at spine head but with spine heel worn even with text block's bottom edge. Joints/hinges as well as binding remain firm. Toning to front and rear free endpapers; antiquarian ink ownership inscription on front free endpaper as well; full page of handwritten essay in pencil on front flyleaf; pencil notes on blank bottom half of page 53; varied toning and foxing to interior text leaves; several rear leaves affected by light moisture stains at their fore-edge margins. With unpaged b/w frontispiece illustration and unpaged b/w plates between pages 40-41 and 64-65 all signed "Howland." A poor copy per the aforementioned weak exterior cosmetics but this 1855 Nashville edition is unrecorded by OCLC and nor is it cited by Ronald R. Allen in his bibliographical reference TENNESSEE IMPRINTS 1791-1875. Thomas O. Summers was editor of the weekly newspaper Nashville Christian Advocate.

Aggiungi al carrelloRed Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No dj. Improved Edition. The author of this history of Dundee is not stated but it is believed to be John McLean Beatts (1812-1893). He held several positions in government of Dundee and was elected to the Town Council where he was responsible for establishing a school of design, improving city streets, for erecting a lunatic asylum, and for securing ground at the Fairmuir for recreation purposes. A skilled antiquarian, he was entrusted with documenting and indexing the archives of Dundee City and was able to translate inscriptions on various old monuments from Latin and old Scottish. This book arose from his work as an archivist, at the suggestion of the then Chief Magistrate, Provost James Yeaman (1816-1886) who sat in the House of Commons from 1873 to 1880 as a Member of Parliament for Dundee. Published by Winter Duncan & Co. in 1878, improved edition (the first edition was in 1873). The book has fairly recently been rebacked and recased in the original red cloth covered boards with the original spine overlaid onto new cloth, and as a result is now tight and secure. It measures approx. 10 1/4" x 6 3/4" with xxviii and 327 pages, 6 facsimiles, 2 folding plans and 4 engravings including a vignette title page (all listed are present). The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards and a small stain on the front board. There is wear to the cloth on the corner tips and a small bit of damage to the cloth on the top edge of the rear board. About 1/4" is missing from the top of the original overlaid spine and small pieces are missing from the bottom. The contents are tight and clean and the book has new grey endpapers. There is no inscription. Size: 8vo.

Aggiungi al carrelloSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. D'Orsey was Professor of Elocution at University College, London. 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. On aged, brittle paper, with slight wear and discoloration, a few closed tears along folds and traces of stub adhering to second leaf, but with entire text clear and intact. A long untidy letter, with writing up the margin on outer two pages. Addressed to 'The Revd. A J D'Orsey' and signed 'Tom Taylor'. The topic is an outbreak of cholera at Madeira, about which D'Orsey has clearly launched an appeal. (He may well be the author of the letter on the subject quoted from in The Medical Times, 4 October 1856.) Begins: 'Dear Sir / I remember you perfectly as my class fellow at Glasgow. [Taylor had spent two sessions there before going up to Cambridge.] I am very sorry that your letter finds me making holiday in the country, instead of at my office, the Genl Bd of Health in London'. (Taylor was appointed Assistant Secretary to the Board of Health in 1850, and was Secretary from 1854 to the Board's abolition in 1858.) Had he been at his post he would have been 'in the very centre of such information as you require'. All he can do is 'write by this post to Mr Session, our Medical Officer, sending him your [?] & letter & requesting him to transmit to you sets of all the Papers in the Office likely to be of practical service to you in your efforts to invetigate for the present, a guard for the future against, the terrible visitation which has befallen Madeira.' If Taylor can in any way 'direct public attention to the sad case of that island it will give me satisfaction to do so, but I shd. think the facts, imperfectly known as they are, wd. speak trumpet-tongued.' 'English benevolence', he feels, 'is seldom backward to relieve distant & strange distress' (the recent Potato Famine in Ireland is presumably too close to home), and 'Madeira is both far off enough & startling enough to rouse the sensibilities of this country.' He is 'far off from even a country town' (he cannot even 'procure a Post Office order' to send a 'mite' towards D'Orsey's appeal), but is sure that Session will be 'prompt' and the books will reach D'Orsey in time. In a postscript he gives his 'address for the next week'.

Signed 'Cardiff' beside a good impression of his seal in red wax. Witnessed by 'L. Dutens' and 'D G Jacmar'. The indenture is 'Between The Right Honourable John Lord Cardiff of Cardiff Castle in the County of Glamorgan of the first Part John Smith of Wilton Gilbert in the County of Durham Gentleman of the second Part and Thomas Shafto of Dunston in the said County of Durham Esquire off the third Part'. It concerns 'All that Tenement or Cottage and Garth situated at Collierly now in the possession of Robert Jackson as Tenant thereof Together with all outhouses Yards Entries Casements WAys Lights Liberties Commodities Hereditaments and Appurtenances to the same belonging or appertaining'. Thomas Shafto was presumably a relation (perhaps the brother?) of the Tory MP Robert Shafto (1732-1797), subject of the nursery rhyme 'Bobby Shafto's gone to sea'.
