In 1867 and 1889, the Maison Stern was awarded the Gold Medal at these two World's Fairs. Moïse Stern would later occasionally serve as a member of the jury that awarded this medal. In the 1890s, Mr. Stern brought his son René into the business, which took the name Stern et fils. René Stern took over the shop in 1904. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: None Issued. AN UNFORGETTABLE VISION OF CALIFORNIA BEFORE THE MODERN AGE A dramatic nineteenth-century hand-colored steel engraving depicting three mounted Native Californian horsemen confronting a charging California grizzly bear. One rider casts a lariat while two companions, rifles in hand, close the distance, capturing a moment of extraordinary tension that became one of the most memorable frontier images published in Picturesque America. Drawn by celebrated American illustrator Felix O. C. Darley and masterfully engraved by Francis Holl, the print combines documentary interest with romantic storytelling. Rich hand coloring heightens the action while preserving the remarkable line work characteristic of fine steel engraving. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Original hand-colored steel engraving Professionally matted; the print has not been examined outside the mat, and the method of original issue cannot be confirmed. Published in Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In., edited by William Cullen Bryant. Visible image measures approximately 8? × 5? inches (15 × 21.4 cm). Sheet measures approximately 9¼ × 12½ inches (23.5 × 31.8 cm). Professionally matted to approximately 15¾ × 13 inches using a double mat with gilt rule, ready for framing or display. Engraved from the original drawing by Felix O. C. Darley. Published by D. Appleton & Company, New York. CONDITION: Fine. The engraving presents beautifully with exceptionally fresh hand coloring and strong plate impression. The paper displays only light, even age toning consistent with its age. No tears, repairs, foxing, or other condition issues are evident within the visible image. The print has not been examined outside its archival mat, which remains clean and suitable for display. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - Romanticizing the American Frontier Published during the great age of illustrated American travel books, this engraving reflects how nineteenth-century audiences imagined the landscapes, wildlife, and Indigenous peoples of the Far West. Rather than functioning as a purely documentary image, it presents California as a place of danger, adventure, and heroic encounters with nature, reinforcing the romantic vision that characterized much of the nation's illustrated publishing following the Civil War. ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC WESTERN PLATES IN PICTURESQUE AMERICA Picturesque America became one of the most influential illustrated works of its era, introducing readers to the nation's scenery, cities, and frontier through the work of America's leading artists and engravers. Darley's dynamic compositions helped shape popular perceptions of the American West for generations, while Francis Holl's finely executed steel engraving preserves every detail of the original drawing with remarkable precision. Today the print appeals to collectors of California history, Western Americana, Native American imagery, sporting art, nineteenth-century illustration, and the golden age of American book engraving. SUBJECTS: California Grizzly; Native Californians; Bear Hunting; Felix O. C. Darley; Francis Holl; Picturesque America; William Cullen Bryant; Hand-Colored Steel Engravings; Western Americana; Frontier Art, Americana; Western Art; California History; Sporting Art; Nineteenth-Century Illustration; Prints. Each plate is followed by a short critique by Thackeray. Thackeray was an old friend of Marvy, a French artist, who took refuge in London after the chaos of 1848. Theodore Taylor's 1864 biography of Thackeray mentions the history of the book: "A fine and skillful landscape painter himself, M. Marvy, while here, as a means of earning a living, made a series of engravings after the works of our English landscape painters. The publishers, however, would not undertake the work without a series of letter-press notices of each picture from Thackeray; and the latter accordingly added some criticisms which are interesting as developing his theory of this kind of art" (p.32). Print. Hand-colored aquatint engraving by T. Sutherland after W. J. Huggins. Image: (15 1/8 x 25 1/4 inches). Sheet: (18 1/2 x 27 7/8 inches). A beautiful, expansive scene showing the journeys of ships and other sailing vessels toward the Cape of Good Hope. The present image shows Table Bay, a natural bay located on the Atlantic coast of South Africa. Table Bay holds historical significance due to its strategic location and its role in maritime exploration and trade routes. The British East India Company established a refreshment station at Table Bay in 1652, which served as a crucial stopover point for ships traveling between Europe and the East Indies, providing fresh supplies and repairs. In 1795, during the French Revolutionary Wars, the British seized control of the Cape Colony, also known as the Cape of Good Hope, from the Dutch East India Company. The colony was subsequently returned to the Dutch in 1803 but was recaptured by the British in 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars. Lord Charles Henry Somerset, to whom the artist W. J. Huggins dedicated this image, served as the governor of the Cape Colony from 1814 to 1826. Under his term as governor, Somerset played an important role in British expansion into the Eastern Cape. When the British experienced a serious unemployment problem as a result of the Napoleonic Wars, the British government encouraged people to immigrate to the Cape Colony. This period saw one of the largest stages of British settlement in Africa. The present image shows masses of people arriving on ships, sailing toward the sprawling colony which can be seen in the distance. The artist William John Huggins was a renowned British marine painter who gained royal patronage for his artwork. He embarked on a voyage as a seaman between 1812 and 1814, during which he made numerous drawings of ships and landscapes in China and other locations. Settling in Leadenhall Street, London, he established himself as a professional artist, specializing in drawings of ships for the East India Company. Huggins exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1817 onward and at the British Institution for Promoting the Fine Arts from 1825. He became a marine painter to both George IV and William IV, producing notable works such as three large paintings depicting the Battle of Trafalgar. Known for his nautical expertise, Huggins's paintings are esteemed for their portrayal of ships, which were often engraved, as is the case here, further extending their reach and influence. Thomas Sutherland, the engraver, was a skilled aquatint artist, who specialized in hunting, coaching, military, and naval subjects.…
