Condizione: VERY GOOD. First American edition. The first, and most popular, book by this Scottish author and minister, published under the pen name of Maclaren. A collection of stories of Scottish rural life, which combined humor with pathos and a liberal use of Scots dialogue. The title of this book alludes to the Jacobite song ("There grows a bonnie brier bush in our Kailyard") and the term "Kailyard School" (kailyard is a small kale, or cabbage, kitchen garden attached to a cottage) was applied to a group of Scots writers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries who were considered to be overly sentimental by their critics - or perhaps just too widely popular. 317 pp. Very good light green cloth with a dark green border and decoration on front cover, gilt lettering on front and spine (gift card from Christmas 1896 affixed to front pastedown, previous owner's name).…

VG sand buckram, spine darkened. Beige sides. Leather title-piece. 63, [1] p.; front. (port.); 17 cm. Signature: Ian Maclaren in gold on front cover. Prior owner's inscr. on ffep `The parallel between dipsomania and bibliomania is very close and suggestive. It is the wife who in both cases is usually the sufferer and good angel.' (p. 51) `.it is the triumphant cunning with which the bookman will smuggle a suspicious brown paper parcel into his study at an hour when his wife is out, or the effrontery with which he will declare when caught, that the books have been sent unbeknown to him, and supposes merely for his examination. For, like drink, this fearsome disease eats into the very fibre of character, so that its victim will practise tricks to obtain books in advance of a rival collector, and will tell the most mendacious stories about what he paid for them. Should he desire a book, and it be not a king's ransom, there is no sacrifice he will not make to obtain it. His modest glass of Burgundy he will cheerfully surrender, and if he ever travelled by any higher class, which is not likely, he will now go third, and his topcoat he will make to last another year, and I do not say he will not smoke, but a cigar will now leave him unmoved. Yes, and if he gets a chance to do an extra piece of writing, between 12 and 2 A.M., he will clutch at the opportunity, and all that he saves, he will calculate shilling by shilling, and the book he purchases with the complete price--that is the price to which he has brought down the seller after two days' negotiations--anxious yet joyful days--will be all the dearer to him for his self-denial.' (p. 54-56). Illustrated by photograph by. 2nd impression edition. Binding is Hardcover.…
