Quarter Leather. Condizione: Very good. The first two-volume edition of The Illustrated History Of The War Against Russia by Edward Henry Nolan, published circa 1857 by James S. Virtue of London. (illustratore). First Edition. Quarto, [two volumes], vii, [1], 812pp, [2]; v, [3], 772pp, [2]. Three-quarter brown calf, marbled boards. Spines rebuilt, original calf laid over new spine. Text block resown, rubbing to marbled boards. Internally clean, free of notable foxing or wear. Both volumes complete: Frontispiece portrait, vignette title page, 4 bi-fold maps and 36 engraved plates in Volume I; Frontispiece portrait, vignette title page, 2 bi-fold maps and 30 engraved plates. From the library of Charles Fleischman of Cincinnati, with his library plate on front endpaper. This work first appeared as an illustrated, 8-volume work in 1856, published by James Virtue of London. This is the first two-volume edition, fully illustrated with maps and plates of the Crimean War.

Twelvemo, 148pp. Publisher's original brown cloth, wreath design stamped in blind to covers. Title in gilt on spine. Solid text block, slight ripple to cloth, worn corners. Light soiling to endpapers, faint foxing throughout, a very good example. Previous institution ownership plate affixed to front flyleaf. (Sabin 2020). George Dod Armstrong (1813-1899) was a Presbyterian minister with an educational background in chemistry and mechanics. He was born in New Jersey, but spent his professional career as a resident of Virginia. This work, The Christian Doctrine of Slavery, defends the practice of slavery through Armstrong's readings of the Bible, with specific references to verses throughout.

Publisher's pebbled brown cloth, ruled in blind, title stamped in gilt on the cover. Yellow endpapers. Touch of wear to cloth at the head of the spine. Some faint transference from plates to adjacent leaf. Solid text block. Free of ownership marks or notations. This work includes a lithograph with a fold-out "View of Lake," and 46 additional plates. The "Index to Plates" calls for 48 plates and a fold-out "View of Lake," but the two lacking (O.C. Betts and Peter Neff) are lacking in all catalogued examples. (Sabin 89822) An outstanding example of this scarce work on early Cincinnati. A revised and enlarged edition of this report was issued in 1862, printed by Bradley & Webb of Cincinnati. (Sabin 89825) Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, founded in 1845, was designed by landscape architect Howard Daniels and later refined by Adolph Strauch. It is the resting place for many of Cincinnati's prominent industrial, political, and cultural figures, including Salmon P. Chase (Chief Justice of the United States), Civil War General Joseph Hooker, Procter & Gamble cofounders James Gamble and William Procter, the Nicholas Longworth family, and members of the Taft family.

Housed in custom green cloth chemise, title in gilt on the spine over morocco label. In 1856, British explorer William Chandless (1829-1896) journeyed to Salt Lake City, traveling overland from the Missouri River along the emigrant trails used by Mormon pioneers. His route followed portions of the Platte, Sweetwater, and Green Rivers before crossing the Wasatch Range into the Salt Lake Valley. Chandless spent several months in Salt Lake City, observing Mormon society and leadership, recording his impressions of its social structure, religious practices, and economic organization. His observations provide one of the earliest detailed accounts of the Utah Territory and the Latter-day Saints during Brigham Young's leadership.
