Twenty numbers in nineteen monthly parts, as issued, the final part forming a double number. Octavo (8vo). Original blue-green pictorial wrappers, uncut; housed in a custom quarter-morocco slipcase. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Dickens by Finden after a portrait by Daniel Maclise, and 39 etched plates by and after Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"). First-issue text points, with "visiter" for "sister" on p. 123 in Part IV and "latter" for "letter" on p. 160 in Part V. The four plates in Parts I-II and the portrait in Part XIX/XX are in first state, with the publisher's imprint; plate 29 is from the first steel, with the long title, "Nicholas makes his first visit to the lodgings of Mr. Bray." Text and plates complete. The advertisements are nearly complete, with the Nickleby Advertiser present in every part and most of the inserted advertisements and announcement slips called for by Hatton and Cleaver. Includes the scarce optional Charles Tilt yellow slip in Part XI and the fragile "Hill's Seal Wafers" advertisement in Part XIX/XX, retaining all five coloured specimen wafers. Lacking only the "This Day is Published" advertisement in Part VIII and "The Medical Casket" in Part XVI. Contents generally very good, with slight marginal browning and foxing; plate 39 heavily browned. Approximately seven parts have repaired or rebacked spines. Minor chips and wear to the spine ends and wrapper edges, with scattered soiling. A few parts have old ink numerals on the spines; one bears an early owner's inscription on the front wrapper. An attractive set, exceptionally complete as to advertisements and serial ephemera, preserving two notably scarce survivals. Fir…st edition in German of "American Notes for General Circulation", published in 1842 and translated into German by G.A. Moriarth. "American Notes" is based on Dickens's letters to John Forster, Maclise, Beard, Mitton and Fontblanque, and his journal. Sailing from Liverpool on 3 January 1842 Dickens visited numerous cities in the United States and Canada, including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Richmond, St. Louis, Cleveland, Niagara Falls, Montreal and Quebec, before leaving for England from New York City on June 7. Dickens was exhausted by the trip, even though he had been greeted with great affection by his readers there, and his impressions of America and Americans are not always flattering. The practice of spitting in public was a particular anathema: "The flashes of saliva flew so perpetually and incessantly out of the windows all the way, that it looked as though they were ripping open feather-beds, and letting the wind dispose of the feathers" (quoted in Johnson, Charles Dickens, 1952, p.396). His disillusionment is evident in his criticisms of slavery, the American press, and the insanitary conditions of American cities.

Grayish reddish brown boards with dark red calico-texture quarter cloth; plain paper-wrapped boards; printed paper title label to spine. Not in Eckel, Gimbel, or VanderPoel. General wear. Foxing. 1892 newspaper article [The Origin of the Artful Dodger] affixed to front paste-down. Last leaf of text beginning to detach at top. Overall VG (usual foxing to text paper; plates uncommonly clean/faint period pencil pos to ffep). Modern brown leather spine, gilt decorated & lettered, over original publisher's vertically-ribbed tan cloth boards. Modern cloth slipcase 1st US book edition (VanderPoel B125(2); cf.
