Issued simultaneously with a cloth edition, Smith terms this boards edition as the "Cheap" edition. While no ownership markings… are present, this volume was acquired from Walter Smith's estate. Wear & soiling, with paper detaching from boards underneath. Rear joint cloth split. Title label mostly worn away. A Good copy only. Grayish reddish brown boards with dark red calico-texture quarter cloth; plain paper-wrapped boards; printed paper title label to spine. See p. 118 of Smith's bibliography for an image of this copy [yes, this was Walter Smith's copy, used in preparation of his Dickens bibliography] 1st US book edition (Smith AMERICAN 4, pp. ).
