Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. ix, 158 pp. Original cloth. Very Good+, in very good+ dust jacket (British price-clipped). Ellen McArthur Lectures, Cambridge University, May 1968. 'Gerschenkron's theme is the contribution which the study of Russian economic history can make to the problems which have preoccupied Western historians. He first considers the way in which the case of the old Believers in Russia, who refused to support the official church but played an important entrepreneurial role in nineteenth-century economic development, bears upon Max Weber's celebrated thesis on the relations between the Protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism. In the course of his discussion, Professor Gerschenkron provides important information on the doctrinal beliefs of this group, their social status and the extent to which they were persecuted and discriminated against by the State. His conclusion is that the persecution certainly afforded sufficient impulse to engage in profitable activities and to develop the traits Weber considered as specific features of the 'capitalist' spirit' (Cambridge University Press Web site).…

, Friedrich, Hugo, 1904-1978. Epochen der italienischen Lyrik. Frankfurt am Main, Vittorio Klostermann, 1964, xvi, 784pp., very good large blue cloth. Taught in Freiburg 1937-1970. "Der Literaturwissenschaft ist ein Handbuch geschenkt worden. Selbst der zu Widerspruch geneigte Kritiker wird die philologische Virtuosität des Verfassers anerkennen, die traumhaft sichere Beherrschung der phänomenologischen Kategorien, sein philosophisches Rüstzeug, das ihm wieder zu einem Meisterwerk verholfen hat, bewundern" (Christ und Welt, 1966, cited in Romanische Forschungen). This was the major work of his late career, noted by Fritz Schalk for its scholarship, but also for the writing style: "Die Fülle des Stoffs, die in den Epochen zur Anschauung gebracht wird, macht dank der vom Anfang bis zum Ende auf gleicher Höhe sich haltenden Diktion die Lektüre zu einem Genuß.".…

Softcover in Dustjacket. Condizione: Near Fine. WEST AUSTRALIANA AUTOBIOGRAPHY -First Edition. 308 p. : ill., facsims., ports. ; 24 cm. Ewers, John K. (John Keith), 1904-1978 English literature. Australian writers, 1945-: Ewers, John K. (John Keith), 1904-1978. Biographies Authors, Australian -- Biography #240925 John Keith Ewers (1904-1978), teacher and writer, was born on 13 June 1904 at Subiaco, Perth, second son of Victorian-born parents Ernest Ewers, orchardist, and his wife Annie Eliza, nà e Gray. After his mother died when he was 6, Keith lived with an aunt and uncle in Subiaco until his father found stable employment as a wharf labourer and remarried. In 1914 the family moved to Carlisle. Educated at James Street Intermediate and Perth Modern schools, in 1923 Ewers served as a monitor at the Thomas Street primary school, Subiaco, before attending Clarement Teachers' College. TheÂAustralian JournalÂpublished (1924) his first short story, under the nom-de-plume, 'J. K. Waterjugs'.In 1924 Ewers was posted to a small school at South Tammin. The surrounding wheatbelt district provided the setting and characters for much of his writing. While teaching there and at other country schools, he published more than forty pieces of work (mainly short stories) in local newspapers. From 1929 to 1939 he taught at Beaconsfield State School, south of Fremantle. He published his first book privately, a collection of poems entitledÂBoy and SilverÂ(1929). His first novel,ÂMoney StreetÂ(London, 1933), a romantic story about a group of residents of inner-suburban Perth, remains the work for which Ewers is most noted. During the 1930s his literary review, 'Australiana', appeared regularly in theÂWest Australian; subsequently, his column, 'Australian Bookman', was published in theÂDaily News. At St Alban's Anglican Church, Highgate, on 20 June 1936 he married Jean Grant McIntyre; their only child was born in 1939.Ewers taught at Nedlands (1939-42) and Perth Boys' (1943-47) schools, then retired to write full time. Within twelve years he published five major works of fiction:ÂTales from the Dead HeartÂ(Sydney, 1944),ÂMen Against the EarthÂ(Melbourne, 1946),ÂFor Heroes to Live InÂ(Melbourne, 1948),ÂHarvest and Other StoriesÂ(Sydney, 1949) andÂWho Rides on the River?Â(Sydney, 1956). He also wrote poetry, educational texts and critical essays, and showed his talent for local history inÂBruce RockÂ(1959).As a young man, he had been actively involved in promoting an appreciation of literature in the wider community and had assistedÂ(Sir) Walter MurdochÂto found the Australian Reading Circle in 1930. Later, as one of Western Australia's foremost writers, Ewers helped to establish the State branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers (president 1938-39 and 1946-47). He co-ordinated the acquisition and preservation ofÂTom CollinsÂHouse, Swanbourne, by the F.A.W., of which he was made a life member (1967).Despite Ewers's Methodist and Congregational upbringing, in his twenties he rejected church-based faith and declared himself an agnostic and a sceptic. In middle age he read J. G. Bennett'sÂThe Crisis in Human AffairsÂ(London, 1954). His subsequent association with Bennett led him in 1958 to became a follower of Subud, an Indonesian-based spiritual group. Ewers died on 9 March 1978 at Shenton Park and was buried in Karrakatta cemetery; his wife and daughter edited his autobiography,ÂLong Enough for a JokeÂ(1983).
