George William Grace was an American linguist who specialized in historical and comparative linguistics, ethnolinguistics, and Austronesian languages, especially the Oceanic languages of Melanesia. He joined the Department of Linguistics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 1964, serving three years as chair (19661969) and three decades as editor of Oceanic Linguistics (19621991), a journal he founded while teaching anthropology at Southern Illinois University (19601964). The Feast of the Dead had a brief career in the upper Great Lakes region. The ceremony was not continued for long after the establishment of French missions and trading stations at Sault Ste. Marie and in nearby locales during the seventh decade of the 17th century, and it would be difficult to find any traces of the communal aspects of the Feast in the mortuary customs of the Chippewa descendants of those peoples today. But certain practices involved in the Feast of the Dead of the 17th century reflect the sociopolitical and economic life of the participants, and what insights are afforded are relevant to Chippewa history. There are numerous kinds of linguistic information which can be relevant to culture-historical problems, but that of the greatest interest in the first instance is the classification of the languages involved. In the case of Austronesian, of course, we are dealing with a single language family, and therefore the problem of classification becomes that of subgrouping. Most of the discussion of specific culture-historical points will be in terms of Austronesian subgroups. Author of the Raffles Books. American Reprint Published in 1908 by Charles Scribner's Sons. Hardcover Format. English author Ernest William Hornung is mostly remembered as the creator of the exciting detective series featuring the wily Raffles, a gentleman thief. Hornung was a prolific author, whose works were admired by the likes of Rudyard Kipling and Arthur Conan Doyle. In fact, Hornung married Doyle's sister, Constance. Hornung set quite a few of his stories in the Australian outback, and "Stingaree" is one of those. It also appeared as a play. Stingaree is a gentleman outlaw - a stagecoach hold-up man - but he maintains a certain demeanor which reflects a developed sense of style, ego - and ethics, despite his dubious choice of career. The book is illustrated by artist George W. Lambert. This handsome hardcover is the Charles Scribner's Sons 1908 reprint. TITLE : Stingaree. AUTHOR : E. W. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book with moderate wear that remains clean and serviceable, with the following attributes and imperfections and noted: EXTERIOR - Spine extremities are compressed; head of spine is slightly frayed; gilt title and embellishment are bright. Board surfaces are mildly rubbed; there is just a touch of scuff to the rear board; top edge gilt is mildly rubbed, but basically still bright. BINDING - Solid. No leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR - Frontispiece lacks tissue guard; A few of the leaf edges have tears where the first reader separated the leaves somewhat carelessly. I've shown a picture of the most egregious tear above with a magnified section, showing clearly the loss to that leaf edge. (The reader was a little too impatient to keep reading!) This is the only tear I spotted with such loss, however there are a few closed tears on other leaves. For the most part the interior is clean and unmarked.
