Matityahu Moshe Shoham (Polyakevich) (1893 Warsaw, Poland - 1937), writer , poet and playwright, was orphaned at an early age, received his Jewish education from his grandfather and uncle, but learned foreign languages and pursued general studies independently. He immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1930, but could not find a job to support himself and so two years later returned to Poland. He was chairman of the Hebrew Writers Association in Poland for two years, assisted in editing the weekly bi-weekly association, and lectured at the Jewish Studies Institute in Warsaw. His plays deal with the world of the Bible, presenting it in a mythical-legendary manner. Shoham is not always faithful to the biblical source and he transforms the Biblical figures into archetypal figures that reflect higher ideas, whether positive or negative. Shoham's protagonists are brave, extreme individualists, and those who confront society and rebel in the name of the values they believe in, unlike the generation in which they live. Shoham also provides a central role to women in his plays, making him exceptional in the period he lived in. His best-known play "Tyre and Jerusalem" was staged by the Habima Theater in 1958 ("The text was adapted for the performance by A. Shlonsky). In 1992 Tye and Jerusalem was adapted to a screenplay by Ziva Tzahar, and in 2003 it was staged at the Beit Lessin Theater, directed by Yosi Izraeli. His play 'Jericho' was translated into English in 1974 by Reuben Ben-Yosef.
