The book played a major role in introducing Bauhaus ideas to Britain and the English-speaking world and significantly shaped twentieth-century architectural discourse and praxis. 8vo (6" x 8"), publisher's cloth binding, first edition later state photomontage dust jacket by László Moholy-Nagy, 112 pages, b/w photographic illustrations. Translated from the German by P. Morton Shand and with a preface by Frank Pick. A desirable mid-century printing of a foundational modernist text, uncommon with the iconic Moholy-Nagy dust jacket. Slight bowing and minor rubbing to boards. Glue burn and foxing to endpapers, not affecting remaining leaves. Mild rubbing and light chipping to dj, with creasing to bottom edge of front cover. A very nice copy notwithstanding.

The collection reveals Heal's connections with many of the leading figures of the time with inscr…ibed copies from his fellow furniture designer Hamilton Smith, review copies of works by William Lethaby and his own copies of early publications by the Designs and Industries Committee which he had helped found. There are polemics by Clough Williams Ellis as well as obscure exhibition catalogues and reports (several unrecorded) from organisations that he supported and helped to run. Altogether a fascinating insight into the life of an influential taste-maker and businessman in England in the first half of the century who ran Heal and Son on Tottenham Court Road for 40 years and played an active role in cultural life in London and further afield.
