The Legend of Pope Joan, a female pope of the ninth century, has survived since the early thirteenth century. Joan was said to disguise herself as a man and traveled to Rome where she become well known and respected for her erudition, and elected to succeed Leo IV. She was ultimately killed or died after giving birth to a child which proved she was a female. Spanheim (1600-1649) was a professor of theology in Leiden where he became one of the prominent defenders of the Calvinistic doctrine. During the Reformation the Catholic Church attempted to dismantle the legend and reformists used the existence of a female pope as argument against Catholic doctrine and the papacy. Bon état, intérieur propre et frais, petit manque au niveau de la coiffe des deux vol, petit accroc sur la pièce de titre du vol 1, coins frottés. Théologien et historien hollandais, Friedrich Spanheim dit le Jeune (1632-1701) entreprend ici de réhabiliter la figure de la papesse Jeanne, une femme qui se faisant passer pour un homme aurait été élue pape au IXème siècle, avant d'être découverte. Le scandale de cette papesse démasquée était à l'origine d'une vive polémique entre catholiques et protestants. Les protestants arguaient en effet qu'en laissant une femme monter sur le Saint-Siège les catholiques avaient totalement discrédité l'autorité de Rome. Pour se défendre, les catholiques, eux, préféraient nier l'existence historique de Jeanne. Spanheim tranche ainsi : non seulement la papesse Jeanne a bel et bien existé mais ce fut une personnalité de grande valeur qui, contrairement à ce qu'affirme les protestants, a fait l'honneur de la papauté.

He attended Heidelberg University and then went to Geneva to study theology. In 1642 he became Professor of Theology at Leiden. This work gives an account of the Thirty Years War after the intervention of the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus.The work was first printed at Geneva in 1633 and appears to have only appeared in French. There were a number of editions in 1633, the one offered here has no publisher's name or place of printing and is the same as the edition at Lambeth Palace.
