Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. Includes Prologue: On Dove's Feet, the Kurds. Part One covers The Latest News From the Empire; Part Two covers Five Kingdoms on the Offensive. Also contains Epilogue: Where Does the Sea Go at Ebb Tide? Also contains Index. At the heart of Bernard-Henri Levy's passionate essay is his anger at the betrayal of the Kurds. He spirals out from there to offer a strongly felt portrait of our contemporary reality in which the "empire of nothing", the West that has lost its way, risks being superseded by new powers, the "five kings [Russia, China, Turkey, Iran and Sunni Radical Islamism], pathetic yet daunting, cartoonish yet terrible." A challenging analysis, at once scholarly and readable. In this exquisite gem of a book, Bernard-Henri Levy offers a poetic plea for moral courage and clear thinking in these dark times. He is an international treasure. The Empire and the Five Kings is a cri de coeur that draws upon lessons from history and the eternal touchstones of human culture to reveal the stakes facing the West as America retreats from its leadership role, a process that did not begin with Donald Trump's presidency and is not likely to end with him. The crisis is one whose roots can be found as far back as antiquity and whose resolution will require the West to find a new way forward if its principles and values are to survive. One of the West's leading intellectuals offers a provocative look at America's withdrawal from world leadership and the rising powers who seek to fill the vacuum left behind. The United States was once the hope of the world, a beacon of freedom and the defender of liberal democracy. Nations and peoples on all continents looked to America to stand up for the values that created the Western world and to oppose autocracy and repression. Even when America did not live up to its ideals, it still recognized their importance, at home and abroad. But as Bernard-Henri Lévy lays bare in this powerful and disturbing analysis of the world today, America is retreating from its traditional leadership role, and in its place have come five ambitious powers, former empires eager to assert their primacy and influence. Lévy shows how these five are taking steps to undermine the liberal values that have been a hallmark of Western civilization. Bernard-Henri Lévy (born 5 November 1948) is a French public intellectual. Often referred to in France simply as BHL, he was one of the leaders of the "Nouveaux Philosophes" (New Philosophers) movement in 1976. His opinions, political activism and publications have also been the subject of several controversies over the years. Lévy became a lecturer at the University of Strasbourg where he taught a course on epistemology. He also taught philosophy at the École Normale Supérieure. He was a founder of the New Philosophers (Nouveaux Philosophes) school. This was a group of young intellectuals who were disenchanted with communist and socialist responses to the near-revolutionary upheavals in France of May 1968, and who developed an uncompromising moral critique of Marxist and socialist dogmas. In 1977, the television show Apostrophes featured Lévy together with André Glucksmann as a nouveau philosophe. In that year, he published Barbarism with a Human Face (La barbarie à visage humain, 1977), arguing that Marxism was inherently corrupt. Derived from a Kirkus review: Without America's strength and influence, five former empires may vie for global power. French philosopher, activist, and documentary filmmaker Lévy, a self-described "committed intellectual," makes a compelling case that America's isolationism has created a "great vacuum" that may incite aggressive political ambitions in five powers "bent on redrawing, in their favor, the global map of authority and power." Russia, China, Turkey, Iran, and radical Sunni Islam are beginning "to stir again, to set themselves in motion, and, given the world newly exposed by the American withdrawalto recommence the assault on history." For Lévy, America stands as an exceptional nation whose "political, mythological, and symbolic inheritance" impels it to carry the torch of democracy "into dark lands." The author blames the decline of Western influence on "the digitization of the world," where all "expressions of belief are of equal value." "What for so long had been known as 'the truth,' " Lévy writes, "is really a shifting shadow." The author condemns the five empires for their attraction to Nazism, anti-Semitism, fascism, and totalitarianism. Despite his dire warning, Lévy offers cautious hope: The five entities are economically and politically weak, and they lack a vision for a revival of culture and science, instead focusing, morbidly, on past grandeur. An erudite and impassioned call for the West to retake the lead in championing liberty. First U.S. Edition [Stated]. First printing [stated].
