Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. At the end of the nineteenth Century as survivors of the Revolution died off, there was a resurgence of interest in the stories and correspondence of those who had lived through it. This is one such collection: the unedited letters of the widowed Comtesse de Sabran and the brilliant Chevalier de Boufflers. As aristocrats attempting to survive, this first hand account of various moments from this time when more French died in the fight for egalite than in the 300 years previous under the old regime, written in French with little or no expunged parts, this is a primary source for the thoughts and actions taken by those attempting to survive despite their aristocratic backgrounds. A nicely bound book, this is navy leather with linen boards, some with a little scuffing on the front and sides. A quite handsome ridged and banded spine is accented with gilt geometric patterns, along with gilt lettering for the title and dates. Signed binding of Truelove and Hanson B Sloane. Please do not hesitate to contact for more information or pictures.Very Good Condition: 8vo, 3/4 Leather in navy with navy linen boards and pale blue marble endpapers. Portrait of Mme. de Sabran from a portrait by Vigee Le Brun Along with another photo of a bust of Mme. Correspondance Inedite de la Comtesse de Sabran er de Chevalier de Boufflers 1778-1788 . Deuxieme Edition. Deuxieme Edition. Superbly bound by Noulhac in full black crushed morocco in Jansenist style, however with lavish and bold gilt-blocked spine containing six designs between each raised band, elaborately gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers on heavy stock. Included is a separate photograph (6 x 4") of Noulhac and his wife, in his studio in Paris, exceedingly rare, and signed by both Noulhac and wife (imprinted on mounting papere, "Stanislas, Paris"). Book with etched frontispiece, all edges gilt. Noulhac, 1866-1931, according to Alastair Duncan in Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding: ìA superlative craftsman, Noulhac specialized initially in plain leather bindings (reliures jansenistes) and copies of 18th-century bindings. By 1900 he had begun to incorporate modest floral emblems into the dentelled fillet borders on his covers, thus placing this binding most likely Turn of the Century. Book and photograph are fine. Scarce thus.
