Translated into French by Richard Walters. 347 illustrations. Very near fine copy in near fine dust jacket. A fabulous catalogue with artful photographs of the many African sculptures and other items in Robbins collection. Warren Murray Robbins (1923 â" 2008) was an American art collector whose collection of African art led to the formation of the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution. It was the late 1950s when Robbins, then a cultural attachà for the State Department, bought his first piece of African artâ"a carved wooden figure of a Yoruba man and woman of Nigeriaâ"in an antiques shop in Hamburg, Germany. The next year, he bought 32 other figures, masks and textiles, also in Hamburg, and by 1964, he was displaying his collection in a Capitol Hill townhouse. Frederick Douglass once owned the house. And as his collection grew, his museum became a complex of 9 townhouses, 16 garages and 2 carriage houses. In 1987, having surpassed 5,000 pieces, Robbinsâ collection moved to its Mall location, becoming the National Museum of African Art.; Signed by Author.
