Gesamthaft weitgehend sauberes Exemplar in repräsentativem Einband. - - Barth 8729 - Lonchamp (181) nennt 'Plus de 50 dessins en lithographie' - Die Illustrationen von Auguste Bachelin sind sowohl eigene spontan-skizzenhafte Originalzeichnungen, als auch Bearbeitungen nach Vorlagen von Zeitgenossen, jew. bezeichnet 'A.B. d'après [.]', e.g. F. Bocion, G. Roux, W. Vigier, A. de Meuron, A. Anker. - Die beiden Erinnerungsalben Bachelins: Aux frontières (1871), resp. L'Armée de l'Est en Suisse (1872), unterscheiden sich nur partiell in Aspekten, wobei die vorliegende Version etwas umfangreicher ist. - "Nach den französischen Niederlagen im September 1870 [.] belagerten die Deutschen vom 2.11.1870 an Belfort. Die Ostarmee unter General [.] Bourbaki versuchte die Festung zu entsetzen. Mitte Jan. 1871 kämpfte sie an der Lisaine gegen das deutsche Armeekorps Werder. Als Bourbaki erfuhr, dass die Armee Manteuffel sich in Richtung Besançon bewegte, entschied er sich für den Rückzug nach Lyon, aber seine desorganisierten und demoralisierten Truppen wurden zur Schweizer Grenze abgedrängt. Angesichts dieser Gefahr ordnete der Bundesrat die Teilmobilmachung an. [.] Vom 31.1.1871 an standen in Les Verrières und im Val-de-Travers drei Bataillone und einige Geschütze. [.] Bourbaki wurde nach einem Selbstmordversuch am 26.1. durch General Justin Clinchant ersetzt. Am 28.1. bat dieser den Bundesrat um Internierung. Am 1.2. gegen 3 Uhr morgens unterzeichnete [General Hans] Herzog den Vertrag von Les Verrières: Waffen, Munition und Material mussten an der Grenze abgegeben werden. Von 5 Uhr an überschritten die französischen Truppen die Schweizer Grenze: Vom 1. bis 3.2. passierten 87'000 Männer und 12'000 Pferde [.] bei Les Verrières, Sainte-Croix, Vallorbe und im Vallée de Joux. Überall leistete die Bevölkerung grossmütig Hilfe. Der Bundesrat verteilte die Internierten auf alle Kantone (ausser das Tessin)." (etc.; HLS, Bourbakiarmee) -- Dieses Grossereignis - prominent veranschaulicht im Luzerner Bourbaki Panorama (s. bourbakipanorama ch) - verdrängt allerdings den Umstand, dass auch deutsche Flüchtlinge, und zwar Zivilpersonen und Militär, aufgenommen wurden, was von Bachelin in einigen Darstellungen gezeigt wird (z.B. p. 9: Arrivée à Neuchâtel des allemands expulsés de France, oder p. 33: Uhlans prisonniers; vgl. Ed. Jacky, L'occupation des frontières suisses en 1870-1871, 1914, bes. Kap. VI: Charité, hospitalité, bienfaisance). -- Rodolphe Auguste Bachelin (Neuchâtel 1830-1890 Bern), Peintre et illustrateur formé à Paris (SIKART). "Bachelin devint le peintre attiré de l'armée suisse pendant la guerre qui mettait aux prises nos voisins. Quelle que soit la valeur artistique de cette importante partie des son oeuvre, elle garde en tout cas une valeur documentaire que l'avenir ne pourra méconnaître. Artiste-peintre et romancier neuchâtelois, Auguste Bachelin fut, à Paris, l'élève de Ch. Gleyre et de Thomas Couture. De retour au pays, il se distingua dans la peinture d'histoire. Auteur de monographies d'artistes (Léopold Robert, Les Girardet), il écrivit plusieurs romans et nouvelles, dont «Jean-Louis» (1882) qui atteste, dans la peinture des moeurs villageoises, un très réel talent.?En 1870 il expose à Neuchâtel la plus grande toile qu'il ait jamais peinte: «Prière avant la bataile de Morat» . Mais la guerre franco- allemande allait lui suggérer des thèmes plus actuels, empruntés à la tragique réalité. Il suivit l'occupation de nos frontières, assista à l'entrée de l'armée de l'Est aux Verrières; et dès lors se fixa l'originalité essentielle de sa carrière; Bachelin devint le peintre attiré par l'Armée Suisse pendant la guerre qui mettait aux prises nos voisins. Quelque soit la valeur artistique de cette importante partie de son oeuvre, elle garde en tous cas une valeur documentaire que l'avenir ne pourra méconnaître.
