Die Ostarmee unter General [.] Bourbaki versuchte die Festung zu entsetzen. Mitte Jan. 1871 kämpfte sie an der Lisaine gegen das deutsche Armeekorps Werder. Als Bourbaki erfuhr, dass die Armee Manteuffel sich in Richtung Besançon bewegte, entschied er sich für den Rückzug nach Lyon, aber seine desorganisierten und demoralisierten Truppen wurden zur Schweizer Grenze abgedrängt.
