À l'âge du triomphe de l'historia et de la mimésis, où « ce qui ne relève pas de la vue ne concernerait en rien la peinture », la vision de l'au-delà a néanmoins très largement occupé la réflexion et la création artistiques, y compris dans l'art italien qui a été bien moins étudié selon ce point de vue, que ne l'ont été l'art flamand du XVe siècle ou l'art espagnol du XVIIe siècle. On a notamment cherché à comprendre comment des paramètres théologiques et iconographiques d'origine patristique ou médiévale ont pu être intégrés et reformulés par le langage artistique de la Renaissance, à commencer par les modélisations de la vision religieuse définies par saint Augustin et par saint Thomas d'Aquin, la distinction opérée entre vision corporelle, vision spirituelle (ou imaginative) et vision intellectuelle étant centrale pour ces recherches. L'expérience visionnaire a été abordée en particulier selon le rapport varié et parfois gradué du ou des sujets à l'objet de la vision surnaturelle ou transcendante, et suivant l'analyse de dispositifs figuratifs visionnaires qui fonctionnent ostensiblement comme des invitations ou des apprentissages pour la contemplation.
