This is the third volume of the 1639 - 1640 Elzevier edition of the works of Seneca the Elder & Younger (Willems notes a 1640 edition, but not this edition). The first two volumes contain Seneca the Younger, while the third volume contains the works of the Elder, his father. So this volume, although an odd volume technically speaking, stands alone as complete for Seneca the Elder. A lovely copy in a charming binding. This printing is one of Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevir's famed pocket editions of Latin classics, initiated in 1629 during an expansion of the press. The aim was to ensure wide circulation of accurate texts for everyday use, and the books were printed with engraved title-pages, narrow margins, and a distinctive font of type, cut by Christoffel van Dijck, whose influence on subsequent typographers endured well into the 19th century.
