Jahrhunderts tobte in Genf mit grösster Härte der Kulturkampf, der in den katholischen Gemeinden tiefe Wunden schlug, fast wie im bernischen Nordjura. Zürich, NZZ 1972, p. 34). ?? Gaspard Mermillod (Carouge 1824?1892 Rom), Priester und Bischof. 1847 erhielt er die Priesterweihe und wurde Vikar an der Kirche Saint Germain in Genf. Auf Kollektenreisen nach Paris und in andere französische Diözesen, während derer er Gelder für den Bau einer neuen Kirche in Genf sammelte, kam sein ausgeprägtes rhetorisches Temperament zum Zuge. 1857?1864 wirkte er als Pfarrrektor der Kirche Notre-Dame. 1864 wurde er Erzpriester und Pfarrer in Genf und noch im selben Jahr Titularbischof von Hebron und Weihbischof von Bischof Etienne Marilley mit Residenz in Genf; Pius IX. erteilte ihm am 25.9.1864 in Rom die Bischofsweihe. Die Übertragung der Jurisdiktion für den Kt. Genf auf ihn durch Marilley wurde im Kulturkampf als erster Schritt zur Errichtung einer Diözese Genf unter Umgehung der staatlichen Stellen angesehen. Mermillods entschiedenes Eintreten für die päpstliche Unfehlbarkeit auf dem 1. Vatikanischen Konzil verstärkte das Misstrauen der radikalen Genfer Regierung. In seiner Ernennung zum Apostolischen Vikar von Genf am 16.1.1873 sah sie einen Verstoss gegen die Bundesverfassung; sie wies ihn deshalb am 17.2.1873 aus der Schweiz aus. Mermillod leitete seinen Sprengel vom französischen Grenzort Ferney aus. 1883 wurde er zum Bischof von Lausanne und Genf, 1890 zum Kardinal ernannt. Mermillod besass schon früh ein ausgeprägtes Gespür für soziale und gesellschaftliche Fragen. 1884?1889 präsidierte er die von ihm mitgegründete Union catholique d'études sociales et économiques, besser bekannt unter dem Namen Union de Fribourg, welche die Sozialenzyklika Leos XIII. ?Rerum novarum? vorbereiten half.
