March 11, 1942, J. C. Hamel reported to a prisoner of war camp for Dutch Soldiers. They were forced to travel the road to Burma, and eventually he worked on the bridge over the River Quai. He was shipped to Japan near the end of the war, where he was interned in a POW camp, and served heroically as camp chaplain caring for the sick and dying soldiers.
