Aggiungi al carrellohardbound. Condizione: Good. Collection of poems composed whilst on P. and O. Shipping Company liners or cruises between the years 1907 - 1922; the poet goes by the moniker 'A Pessimist' - we assume he must have been an employee of P. and O. in the early decades of the C-20th; the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company… (P&O) was founded in Britain in 1837, being acquired by DP World in 2006; the poet here provides the names of all ships on which he wrote his poems, plus dates of composition, and on occasion the destination of the relevant cruise; as follows: S.S. Sunda - one poem written whilst on cruise to Calcutta February - May 1907; R.M.S. Egypt - one poem June-July 1907; R.M.S. Victoria - 13 poems 1907-1908; R.M.S. Britannia - one poem on cruise from Bombay to China 31.1.09; R.M.S. Mooltan - 12 poems 1909 - 1910 [note: three P&O ships were named Mooltan, we take it to be the second of these, first launched in 1905]; O.S.S. Palermo - 4 poems on cruise to China, Japan, an Australia October 1910-April 1911; R.M.S. Moldovia [the first of two Moldovias, launched 1903] - 9 poems between 1911-1912 and a further 3 in 1922; R.M.S. Medina - 3 poems July 1912 -1913 [it's possible this was the maiden voyage of the Medina for the general public]; S.S. Nagoya - one poem 10.10.13, again this was likely the Nagoya's maiden voyage; R.M.S. Mongolia - 7 poems 20.6.14 - 1915, and also including two poems relating to WWI, the first paraphrasing the Commander's speech at "Muster" on Sunday 9.8.14, the second of a general nature, and titled 'A Glimpse of War'; R.M.S. Maloja - 3 poems 1915-1916; R.M.S. Mantua - 4 poems 1920 including one titled 'Topical Song Air - Killaloe.sung at First Saloon Concert 21.5.20', from which we infer that 'A Pessimist' may also have been a performer on some of the cruises; there follow 7 incidental poems 1907-1913, and further war poems, one footnoted 'Southern Army H.Q. 7.11.17', the other 'Southern Army H.Q. February 1918'; the poems are rhymed and generally (apart from the war poems) of a humorous nature, and detail many of the experiences and personalities of your typical cruise liner, but on occasion go into detail about the ships themselves; a unique addition to the history of the P&O company, its ships and cruises, in the early decades of last century; we can find no reference to this book anywhere (no copies on WorldCat), nor to the poet 'A Pessimist', and are of the opinion it may be the only copy produced; the poems are typed onto Nissen & Arnold Coast Linen paper, and bound in black buckram, with gilt titling to front board; spine professionally repaired and new endpapers installed; text block tanned, a few pages with creases to corners from knock to text block, mild foxing, mild shelfwear to boards, o.w. Very Good. no dustwrapper. 196pp. 25 x 20cm. Good.
