hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1960 signed and inscribed first edition, Crown Publishers (New York), oversize 11 1/4 x 14 3/4 inches tall grey portfolio with color pictorial covers and black cloth spine, containing a four-page title and introduction and twelve vibrantly colored plates. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to…covers. Nicely inscribed and signed by the artist on the verso of the front cover, with a handwritten note from Katz laid in. Otherwise, a very good set - clean, bright and unmarked. Scarce; OCLC (No. 878152892) locates only one copy at institutions worldwide - at the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~RCL~ [2.5P] Alexander Raymond Katz (1895-1974) was a modernist artist working in painting and illustration, known for his versatility and his extensive use of contemporary styles, and his many works depicting themes from Chicago, his longtime home. Katz's later designs often incorporated interpretive depictions of the Hebrew alphabet, and are seen widely in synagogues across the United States. Katz was a strong advocate for unique, symbolic synagogue architecture. In his publications on the topic, he highlighted the lack of codified styles for synagogue architecture, and argued that the use of symbolism in image and overall design was crucial in contemporary synagogues. As an architect, designer, and artist for synagogues in the mid-20th century, Katz's legacy is represented in part by the still-standing buildings containing his works. A prominent example of his work is at the Rego Park Jewish Center in Queens, which features a mosaic of his design on the building's façade. Katz's mosaic design is seen above the doors at the Rego Park Jewish Center, and his works are seen in over 200 synagogues across the United States.

Any working art critic inevitably acquires an extensive knowledge of this genre of printed ephemera. Heralding gallery and museum shows, invitations flood the mailbox, crowd the desk and all too often accumulate so intractably on the kitchen counter as to seem part of the decor. You can't live with them, and until the show is over, you can't throw them out. Still, life without such art-world byproducts would be a lot more difficult. Not only do they convey the important facts -- the who, when and where -- of shows that need to be seen. They're also advertisements bent on seducing us into attendance by being clever, eye-catching or provocative -- although sometimes they nip interest in the bud. (There's probably no art lover with mailing-list credentials who hasn't held up some gallery announcement and said, "Forget it!") Invitations are style statements in a minor key, ancillary artworks of a collective sort. Designed by artists, by graphic designers, by art dealers and museum curators -- usually a combination of the above -- they are the advance guard for the real thing. Their merit is judged in the very act of reading one's mail." -- Roberta Smith, "Art Invitations As Small Scraps Of History," New York Times, May 16, 1993. Very Good. Light edge wear. Contents clean and unmarked.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Oversized item, so some additional shipping costs will be required. This scarce 1946 portfolio, published by L. M. Stein, is copy #63 of just 500. It includes a hand-numbered and signed page by A. Raymond Katz, along with ten mounted chromolithographic prints - one interpretation for eac…h Commandment - attached lightly along the top edge, centered on large brown sheets. Each print is 12.5 x 9.5 , and the portfolio (and page) size is 18 x 13 . All eleven sheets (the ten Commandments and signature leaf) are housed in a three-panel pouch (side, top, bottom) inside the original binding. With just 500 copies produced, signed and numbered, this edition is extremely rare - particularly in original condition with all mounted prints and signature leaf intact. A. Raymond Katz (1895-1974) was a Hungarian-born, American modernist artist celebrated for pioneering Hebraic visual symbolism in mid-20th century Jewish art. Katz created murals, stained-glass, reliefs, and print work for synagogues nationwide including a landmark cycle interpreting the Ten Commandments for Chicago s Loop Synagogue in 1936. The prints in this portfolio derive from those synagogue frescoes. As Dudley Crafts Watson noted, Katz transformed them into a new form of visual music to chime into the conscience the laws of the Ten Commandments . This edition was released following his influential 1945 publication Prelude to a New Art for an Old Religion. The portfolio is somewhat worn. Board corners are bumped, rubbed and exposed. Top and bottom of spine rubbed and fraying a bit. Edges of portfolio bowed up at rest. The top and bottom panels of the portfolio pouch are separated from the portfolio at the outer edges. The signature leaf is edgeworn, with small rips and chips along edges. Overall, the prints are in excellent condition. The only notable cosmetic issues are: 1) The bottom left corner of print #4 is bumped, with small chips, and 2) the top right corner of print #10 is free from the backing page (left corner still attached). However, the backing pages of the prints have some edgewear, varying in degree. The backing pages of prints #3, #4, #5 and #7 have notable rips or sections ripped off (see photos). Signed by Author(s).
