Considering the enormous cultural plurality of India and uneven socioeconomic development of its people, the Government of India listed certain communities as Scheduled Tribes (STs) for initiating development programmes and providing assured representation. Despite such provisions, in case of a few groups, the common programmes did not appear to make any headway. In fact, their population was either stagnant or declining suggesting high mortality rates. In order to ensure the development of these poorest of the poor among the ST communities, certain groups were identified initially in 1975. The criteria fixed for identification included declining or stagnant population, very low level of literacy and pre-agricultural level of technology. Thus 75 groups among the ST communities of India were identified in 17 States and 1 Union Territory, who initially were called Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs), and later renamed as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). During April to June 2012 the Anthropological Survey of India carried out a study of all the PVTGs. Its research teams visited various States, concerned tribal development agencies and non-government organizations. The survey was conducted with emphasis on gathering data on their socio-economic status and development. The team also visited the PVTG hamlets, interviewed the people, and recorded their observations with regard to development. Socio-economic status of each PVTG is described in the volume while a summary including a few suggestions is given in the introduction.

The present treatise is compilation of twelve research articles on Traditional Knowledge in Indian Society for sustainable living. This research comprises investigations into local technologies, associated knowledge of natural resources and their management. With the rapid pace of changing environment to day the local knowledge is eroding fast and much has already been lost. It is an attempt to document such knowledge resources especially the ethno-medical practices, documentation of keeping genealogical records at pilgrim centre and ways of agricultural practices in high altitude for sustainable living. Any development programme especially Investment Induced Development (IID) attempt to improve and enrich the rural as well as marginalized ethnic communities in the country in which implementation authority should also incorporate traditional knowledge of the locals and involve the participation of local people for a sustainable development, which in turn will open a field of empowerment or occupational opportunities of local inhabitants. The planners, policy-makers, researchers, NGO's and developmental practitioners during their course of launching of any developmental programme in the country side will be helpful by acknowledging this sort of traditional knowledge of rural local people.

Introduction of new varieties of meat product is constantly attempted by the processors and is also carefully watched by the consumers. Another aspects of value addition, which is gaining momentum, is the value added health foods. These products are designed to suit the nutritional requirement, diet restrictions of different categories of people. Energy foods for sports men, defense food and irradiated foods are developing with the specific purpose. Naturally when the value addition is done with the specific purpose the cost of the products takes the back seat while the quality with purpose is a priority like designer eggs, low fat meat recipes, high protein diets for children and self-heating cans etc. These are prepared as per the dietary guidelines and often have become an advertising tool for the manufacturing companies. While discussing about meat processing optimum utilization of by products is equally important for increasing profit and minimizing environmental pollution.
