The author graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1971 and received an M.A. in European History from Stanford University and an M.M.A.S. in military history from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. As an infantry officer, he has served in a variety of assignments in Germany, Korea, and the United States. From 1979 to 1982 he was an instructor and assistant profession in the Department of History at West Point, He assumed command of an infantry battalion at Ford Ord in the summer of 1987. This study examines the evolution of the German Army's defensive doctrine on the Russian Front from 1941 to 1945.
