Less famous than Gettysburg, Shilohor Vicksburg, it is no less significant. Chickamauga represented the last opportunity for the Confederacy to win the war. During the course of the campaign, Confederate commander Braxton Bragg had ample opportunity to wipe out the Army of the Cumberland under William Stark Rosecrans. However, Bragg missed every opportunity and engaged the Union forces in a pitched, costly, confused battle in the woodlands of Western Georgia.
