The Maison Stern bookplate became a large "S" containing a rearing lion, its foreleg resting on the intertwined monogram "MS." A hand brandishing an engraver's tool and two pieces of armor, a glove, and a helmet, complete the composition. In 1867 and 1889, the Maison Stern was awarded the Gold Medal at these two World's Fairs. Moïse Stern would later occasionally serve as a member of the jury that awarded this medal. In the 1890s, Mr. Stern brought his son René into the business, which took the name Stern et fils. René Stern took over the shop in 1904. Among its prestigious clients, Maison Stern has had the honor of counting the Élysée Palace for its menus and invitations, embassies, the nobility, and major French and foreign companies. First American edition of the text to Berlese's magnificent monograph on the Camellia. "For an opportunity of reading the work of Abbe Berlese on the Camellia, I am indebted to Miss s. Gibbs of Boston, who has recently returned from Europe; and considering it the most interesting and valuable treatise, which has appeared on the characteristics and culture of that magnificent shrub, it has, at her suggestion Interest in the genus peaked in the middle part of the nineteenth century, when large numbers of seedlings obtained from crossing variants of camellia Japonica were raised and named, mostly by the Verschaffelt family, nurserymen at Ghent in Belgium, and by the Abbé Berlèse in Paris. Lorenzo Berlese was born in Campo Molino near Treviso, north Italy. He moved to Paris as a chaplain, where by 1817, he was already cultivating camellias. He built up a large collection of plants and by 1837 the general proliferation in hybrid varieties and the confusion over nomenclature made it clear to him that a detailed monograph was required. A subscription of 250 names was raised, and the work was published (after a false start with lithograph plates). In 1846 he sold his collection of plants before returning to Italy. The plates demonstrate the pervasive influence of Redouté, and the Lindley library index notes that he produced some designs for the periodical "Herbier général de l'Amateur.". The arrangement of the text is unusual: the scientific and practical monograph (under various chapter headings: origins, classification, cultivation, etc.) is printed on the lower half of the recto of each text leaf with the description of the facing plate on the upper half. First edition of the most celebrated illustrated monograph on the camellia. Abbé Lorenzo Berlèse (1784-1863) was an Italian priest who became fascinated with the cam…ellia plant upon his move to Paris, where he was to be a chaplain. Camellias captured the Western imagination when travelers to Japan and China would return with the so-called "Japan rose". It was named camellia by Carl Linneaus, and began to be cultivated successfully and in larger numbers toward the end of the eighteenth century. Berlèse accumulated a significant collection of camellias over twenty years, eventually deciding to record them in the present monograph. J. J. Jung, a lesser-known artist, engraved the plates in a striking and exquisite style, affirming the strong influence of Redouté over botanical works of this period. In 1846 he sold his collection of plants before returning to Italy. Sumptuous contemporary French green glazed full-calf binding, richly gilded, flat spines with overall decorative design incorporating the title, author and volume numbers. In excellent condition with slight wear. Four out of the 300 engravings are missing.
