The first group of papers consists of two autograph signed letters by Abbot to William L. Putnam, Esq., Portland , Maine. Putnam [1835-1918], was a director and president of the Rumford Falls & Buckfield Railroad Company in Portland, a former mayor of the city, a longtime Circuit Court judge and founder of the 54th Artillery CAC. The letters "cover the release of property in New York for elections." The second group relates to land owned by Abbot in Newtonville, Mass. Abbot/Putnam Correspondence. (1) Autograph letter signed by Edwin Abbot written on Wisconsin Central Railroad stationery, 1 page, 8 x 10½" Milwaukee, Wis, February 16th, 1880, to William L. Putnam, Esq. Portland, Maine asking him to discharge a New York mortgage for Miss Steele "My Dear Putnam; You will remember that in November 1875, I had assigned you a mortgage on certain real estate in New York which I wished kept alive for the benefit of Miss Steele, as it covered not only lands of hers but other lands in New York from which I expected to collect a portion of the amount". He asks Putnam to return to him a satisfaction piece according to New York law. To rear signed Edwin H. Abbot and in his hand, "covering the release of property in New York for elections." (2 ) Autograph letter signed by Abbot, 1 page, 8 x 10½" Milwaukee, Wis, March 1 - 1880, to William L. Putnam, Esq. Portland, Maine giving detailed background information of the New York mortgage "My Dear Putnam; Yours of the 27 th received. The facts about the mortgage are these: It was a second mortgage assumed by Miss Steele in the conveyance of property and agreed to be paid by her. This second mortgage covered also her lot and other land of the grantor. The grantor left a thousand dollars of incumbrances, back taxes and such matters which he was by his covenants bound to remove from Miss Steele's land. When this Cooper Mortgage came due this mortgage was assigned to you instead of begin discharged of record. I paid the Cooper estate the full amount, principle and interest, of the mortgage; and you now hold it merely for preserving the incumbrance in Miss Steel's favor against Clunch [sp?]" this he is ready to do but "he is very fussy now and there is no possible risk in your signing the enclosed satisfaction piece I will hold you harmless in every way " To rear signed Edwin H. Abbot and in his hand, "about discharge of New York mortgage." Newtonville Land . (3) Copy of notice to prevent easement of "dower and homestead" Newtonville land, County of Middlesex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1886. Autograph typed legal paper dated October 12, 1886 regarding lands in Netwonville, purchased March 1867, with typed testimony and signature of Milwaukee Notary Public as witness, William Shnewell? Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 2 pages, 9 x 16", stating that Abbot will prevent any class, persons or corporations from acquiring "right of way over or easement in said tractcovering the entire width of proposed street now constructed without right upon my land in front of said Waterhouse parcel , and said Waterhouse never having acquired any ownership or right in any part of said proposed streetthe extension of Highland Avenue". (4) Two typed documents relating to easement of "dower and homestead" Newtonville land, County of Middlesex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts [1886.] describing tracts in Newtonville and Newton, 2 pages, 9 x 16". (5) Four papers regarding Abbot's "dower and homestead" Highland Avenue, Newtonville, County of Middlesex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1883. A release for the sum of $1 dollar from Abbot to Francis A. Waterhouse. Copy of a release; 1 p. 8 ½ x 14", signed and dated by Abbot and his wife, Martha J.
