With 52 exquisite fullpage engravings including a composite engraved title with lively scenes of the life of St Benedict engraved and designed by two outstanding Roman baroque artists; woodcut ornaments throughout, historiated initials at beginnings of chapters. Large printer s woodcut device of a hedgehog at end. Vellum. First edition of this hommage in Latin verse of the life and miracles performed by St Benedict (480-547), founder of the great Benedictine Monastery of Monte Cassino, superbly illustrated with engravings by Aliprando Caprioli after designs of the prominent Roman Baroque painter Bernardino Passeri (1530-c1590). Caprioli was active in Rome between 1575 and 1599 producing historical subjects in the style of Agostino Carracci. The hagiography is divided into 4 parts by Angelo Faggi (1500-93), a learned monk at Montecassino, known as 'Il Sangrino' who became Inquisitor of the Order in 1567 on the recommendation of the Reformer Pope Pius V and ended his life as Abbot of Montecassino. The dedication is to Odoardo Farnese, son of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. Traces of usage, some neat repairs in edges of blank margins, ocasional light traces of waterstaning, but a good copy with strong impressions of the magnificent illustrations; blank margin of title with manuscript presentation inscription to a canon dated 1769.
