How do Nigerian literary artists depict this social illness in their literary works This article examines the treatment of corruption in Iyayi's 'The Contract'. The discourse focuses on the social levels at which corruption is manifested and the effects of corruption on individuals and the society as depicted in the novel. The results will indicate that the novel exposes some identified social ills which become endemic when political and institutional leaders put aside their responsibilities of nation building and succumb to the lure of lucre. Specifically, the leaders depicted in this novel use the awards of contracts ostensibly for nation building as blinds for corrupt self-enrichment and embezzlements of public funds.…

Literature from any part of the world is a response to definite historical and socio-political variables of its time. African literature, to a large extent, could be considered as protest literature.The protest culture rooted in the protest against slavery and colonialism now bears on post-independence social ills like corruption and incompetence which are so widespread in African political and governmental circles. Nigerian writers, especially novelists, have played a significant role in the growth and development of African literature through a vast array of highly successful novels. Studies show that Nigerian novelists like Festus Iyayi, Chinua Achebe and Kris Obodumu direct their critical searchlights on problems associated with corruption and incompetence in governmental circles which seem endemic to Nigeria.Festus Iyayi in 'Violence' is very much disturbed by the rate at which his society is decaying through the effect of corruption and incompetence after independence. The novel is basically set to reflect the moral decadence in Nigerian society between 1960 to the early 80s. Eight years after the publication of 'Violence' corruption and incompetence had not only remained the order of the day in the Nigerian Society, but had also taken a sophisticated dimension. 'Anthills of the Savannah' could be said to be the means through which Achebe shows his disgust for corruption, mediocrity and incompetence in the Nigerian political circle during the years of military dictatorship. Obodumu's 'Die a Little' is concerned with the examination of the inevitable consequences of bad national economic policy hastily put in place by a corrupt and incompetent regime without considering its impact on the people.…

While some scholars hail Iyayi's 'Violence' as an accomplished novel of Social Realism, others do not accord the novel this status. This critical conflict of opinion presents an interesting subject of study. This paper examines whether or not 'Violence' should be considered accomplished in accordance with the popular beliefs about works of Social Realism.Towards this end, the concept of Social Realism and its tenets are discussed and applied in the assessment of Iyayi's 'Violence'. The weaknesses and strengths of Iyayi's deployment of the concept in the novel are thereby identified and discussed. The paper thus concludes that although Iyayi's 'Violence' is significant in its treatment of corruption and injustice in society, the novel has some significant flaws in handling the techniques of Social Realism.…

It begins with the explanation of the concept of psychoanalysis highlighting its relevance to literary interpretation and proceeds with an extensive evaluation of the novel using the theory. Findings of the study are provided toward the end of the essay.Chinua Achebe's 'Anthills of the Savannah' (1987), has attracted the attention of scholars and critics. Several critical theories have been applied to the novel to interpret its meaning. The list of scholars who have used several literary theories to examine the novel could be long. However, this paper adopts the psychoanalytic approach on assumption that if this critical method of interpretation is applied to 'Anthills of the Savannah', it may unearth the literary treasures that lie hidden in the work. Psychoanalytic critical method if properly put to use would provide us with not only the major preoccupation of the story but also the motivating factor for writing the book.'Anthills of the Savannah', psychoanalytic theory reveals, takes its inspiration from historical events in Nigeria from 1966 to possibly 1975. But the issues raised in the novel transcend its space and time. The problems criticized in the novel are universal problems which may differ from one country to another in terms of their complexities. The problem of leadership is the central theme of the novel.…
