Riveting recollections of and acute commentary about such diverse figures as Nicola Chiaromonte, Jean Genet, Mary McCarthy, Jean-Paul Sartre, Susan Sontag, and most controversial of all, Hannah Arendt, whom Lionel Abel skewers rather mercilessly, as only an aggrieved fellow Jewish-American could. Their famous tangle was about Arendt's infamous contentions in her account, "Eichmann In Jerusalem" (1963), about "the banality of evil" (to describe genocidal murderer Adolf Eichmann during his "show trial", her mocking words), and much more painfully, about alleged Jewish complicity in and guilt for the Holocaust. According to Arendt, the few wealthy and well-connected Jewish leaders helped to systematically round up and offer up impoverished and defenseless fellow Jews in order to gain favor with Hitler and to spare themselves. After performing such invaluable service, most of them were killed by the Nazis anyway. Both allegations by Arendt, together with her pivotal - and contrary - assertion that the true significance of the Holocaust is Jewish shame (that such a thing could ever happen) will probably be debated for centuries to come. Rightly or wrongly, there is heartbreaking "proof", if that is the word, of Arendt's cruel thesis: Many Jews who either successfully fought back at first, or survived the camps, or somehow managed to escape unscathed eventually committed suicide - which Arendt ascribes to Jewish shame. (On the other hand, Walter Benjamin, the greatest philosopher-critic of the 20th century, and Arendt's close friend, killed himself in order to save fellow Jewish refugees. ) Meanwhile, Arendt herself - first of all, she regarded the actions of the state of Israel itself as illegal - was subsequently ostracized by the New York and European intellectual elite, her hard-earned reputation in absolute tatters (she died shortly afterwards). Intellectual folly indeed. Lionel Abel, fair-minded as always despite their bitter falling out, nevertheless regards Arendt's OTHER achievements as courageous and monumental. Lionel Abel was a cosmopolitan, New York-based writer/playwright/critic of ideas, who helped shape and define many of the urgent debates that flourished during the Golden Age of American intellectual culture. Despite widespread anti-intellectualism, there was a very brief period when the intellectual was nonetheless considered a valuable member of American society. This valuation, of course, has been dead for a long time, killed off in our mass- and social media age of the talking head, the pundit, the "expert", and most pernicious of all, the "influencer". Much of what Abel has to say in these pieces is often provocative, but always intelligent, illuminating, original - and necessary. The eponymous Essay addresses one of the most meretricious - yet seldom called out - aspects of both high and popular culture: That there are ideas (and personalities behind them) which gain currency and pervasive influence - hence "important", impossible to ignore - yet upon closer inspection, are full of it, sheer "nonsense". Developed more fully by Lionel Abel in his great essay, "Important Nonsense" was first articulated by Bertrand Russell about "bad philosophers" (like Derrida and Foucault) whose core ideas, in the great Russell's acute estimation, are utter nonsense. Just because someone is famous (and academically studied to death) does NOT mean that what they have to say and what they represent make sense in any meaningful way. They do not. Radically asserts, even insists, that tragedy is dead, has been dead for thousands of years, along with the demise of foundational Greek civilization. Since Racine and Shakespeare, we have always had a "not-tragedy" dramatic form that we have not properly NAMED, "tragedy" having such prestige among playwrights and audiences alike. So Lionel Abel helpfully gives us one: Metatheatre, the serious dramatic form that owes an immeasurable debt to Greek tragedy, but is not itself tragedy. The crucial difference between Sophocles and Shakespeare is not the role of fate in human lives, but what moderns have sometimes called "agency". Which, in essence, is self-consciousness. Oedipus never had it - and so was victimized and destroyed by forces beyond his control. Hamlet had self-consciousness - and to an extreme, excruciating degree: Thinking, ruminating, pondering, plotting, scheming, then pulling back in order to think some more whether "to be or not to be". As such, Hamlet is the first full-fledged "intellectual/philosopher" character of Western drama, the man of thought rather than a man of action. Unwilling until the very end to act, he too is defeated by forces that destroy him and those around him. But unlike Oedipus, he is fully aware of the destruction that is about to be unleashed because HE is its primary agent. He is "agency" as ultimate destroyer. Hailed upon its appearance as perhaps the most insightful analysis and appreciation of Western drama, the book has had an outsize and enduring impact and influence on ALL subsequent thinking about the theatre. Lionel Abel was himself a playwright, producer, stage director, actor, translator of European drama (notably, Sartre), and drama critic; his engagement with theatre was at the highest level of personal commitment imaginable.
