A collection centred on the famous love affair and correspondence between Pierre Abélard and Héloïse, with French adaptations by Bussy-Rabutin, Pope, Colardeau, Dorat, Feutry, Mercier, Saurin, and others. Pierre Abélard was a prominent but controversial French medieval philosopher, theologian, and poet. He became Héloïse's teacher, and the two began a love affair which resulted in the birth of their son, Astrolabe. They subsequently married in secret. Héloïse later denied that the marriage had taken place, partly in order to protect Abélard's position and his life as a scholar. Her guardian, the canon Fulbert, was enraged and had men attack and castrate Abélard. Both Abélard and Héloïse subsequently entered religious life. Héloïse later became an important abbess and is also remembered as a writer and scholar. Their letters are among the most celebrated accounts of love to survive from the Middle Ages, combining intensely personal and passionate writing with theological and philosophical reflection.
