First Thus. Magazine Issue. 8vo. 23cm x 15cm. PUblisher's orange card wraps, title and contents printed in black and red to spine and front wrap, with ads printed to the rear wrap. A little scuffed and edgeworn, with some light soiling to the orange card, otherwise strong and bright. Amongst other articles dealing with socialist issues of the day, there is a piece entitled "A Third Way to End The War in Vietnam" by Vietnamese emigre Tran Van Dinh, ex soldier for Vietnamese freedom from the French and Japanese, Foreign Service dignitary and former Vietnames Ambassador to the United States, who makes the very interesting point that the majority of the Vietnamese population were peasant farmers, and "there are only two images which are close to the peasants, the Buddhist Monk, and the Viet Cong cadre. Both are austere, both are uncorrupted. The Viet Cong is feared and admired, but the Buddhist Monk is loved and trusted. The Viet Cong has power, the Monk has sincerity." The implication clearly being that the winning of hearts and minds should be away from one and towards the other, rather than towards an entirely new, unknown and unrespected third power.

Prima edizione
Cloth. Condizione: Near fine. From the library of General William T. Sherman, the first edition of Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln and Notes of a Visit to California by his close friend, Joshua F. Speed. (illustratore). First Edition. Octavo, [2], 67pp, [3]. Brown cloth, title in gilt on spine and front cover. Dark green endpapers. Internally clean, solid text block. Archival tissue reinforcement to hinge of title page. Bookplate of "W.T. Sherman, General" and his son, Philemon T. Sherman, on the front endpaper. (Howes, S-826) (Kentucky, Coleman 2953) (Monaghan 1005) This work by Speed is one of three known copies to enter the public market. Provenance: The Sherman-Fitch Collection, Lot 51424-110, Fleischer's Auction, 2024. This book was acquired by Philemon after his father's death in 1891, at which point the "W.T. Sherman, General" bookplate was added. The second bookplate was added by Sherman's grandson, Tecumseh Sherman Fitch (1908-1969), who inherited the collection in 1942. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Joshua F. Speed, a close friend of Lincoln since his days in the Illinois Legislature, coordinated Union military activities in Kentucky. This responsibility introduced him to Brig. General William T. Sherman, who commanded the Department of the Cumberland in Louisville. Sherman made numerous requests to Washington for supplies for his troops, but it took an intervention by Speed and his direct connection to Lincoln to make it happen. Sherman was amazed and said to Speed: "How is it that more attention is paid to the request of you, a citizen, than to me, a general in the army? You had better take command here." Speed replied: "The only mistake you made, General, was in not asking for more." The two men continued to exchange letters as Sherman's military career moved forward. Their correspondence is likely why Sherman desired a copy of this short memoir by Speed.

Condizione: Very good. New York, May 12th and July 26th, 1886., 1886. Very good. - Two autograph sentiments alternately penned on 4 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide and 4-7/8 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide paper mounted with glue from the verso onto both sides of sheet clipped from an autograph album. The first, penned by the famous American actress reads, "With much pleasure / Yours truly / Maggie Mitchell / May 12th - 1886". The second, penned by the American character actor, reads "Very Truly Yours / W.S. Daboll / N.Y. City / July 26th 1886". Both were once folded and are in very good condition. Born in New York, the American actress Maggie Mitchell (1832-1918) made her debut in 1851 as Julia in "The Soldier's Daughter". She earned much fame for her roles in Jane Eyre, Mignon, Little Barefoot, and Fanchon the Cricket. Once a supporter of the Confederacy she was a close friend of John Wilkes Booth, but she later moderated her views and was admired by Abraham Lincoln who enjoyed her performances at Ford's Theatre and had her over for tea in the Executive Mansion. The prominent American actor W.S. Dobell (d, 1892) was known for his role as Ravennes in a popular comic opera "Erminie". At the age of 35, Daboll committed suicide by poison on August 23, 1892 while in Boston engaged to appear in "Puritania" at the Tremont Theatre.
