Merchant followed in his father's footsteps, and in 1899 at the age of 13 was enlisted into the 4th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. Here Merchant r…eflects on his childhood to the age of 10, and provides a fascinating insight into late-19th century army life, as seen through the eyes of a small boy. His account has been transcribed by his grandson, Alan Aburrow, and the booklet includes a postscript on Merchant's subsequent years. Book.
