Une seconde édition paraît chez J. Lecoffre en 1852. Réagissant au scepticisme de Bayle et des philosophes du XVIIIe siècle, Joseph Actorie s'efforce de leur répondre sur la question du mal, selon lui « la seule arme que la discussion n'ait pas encore brisée entre leurs mains. » Soutenant qu'il est possible de concilier l'existence du mal avec la bonté de dieu, Actorie commence par arguer de la supériorité de la somme du bien sur celle du mal. Il avance ensuite que dieu permet le mal tant qu'il sert un plus grand bien, puis examine les moyens par lesquels la Providence a limité l'étendue du mal. L'ouvrage se conclut par un chapitre consacré à la liberté de culte. « Le règne du dix-huitième siècle est fini, ses plus grandes renommées ont perdu leur prestige ; en vain l'idole reste-t-elle debout sur son piédestal, elle ne reçoit plus les hommages du public intelligent. Qui ne reconnaît maintenant que Voltaire a été un historien infidèle, un philosophe superficiel, un écrivain sans conscience ; que dans la plupart de ses écrits contre le christianisme, le mensonge, l'injure, la raillerie, les sarcasmes tiennent beaucoup plus de place que les raisons ? » (p. ix).
