In den Jahren unmittelbar nach dem Krieg wurden dem informationsbegierigen deutschsprachigen Leser vor allein übersetzte Texte amerikanischer Autoren angeboten, denn die deutsche Geschichtswissenschaft hatte ebenso wie die übrigen nationalgeschichtlich orientierten Universitätshistoriker in Europa die USA als Gegenstand von Forschung und Lehre vernachlässigt. Es fehlte an einführenden Texten, die speziell für nicht-amerikanische Leser geschrieben worden waren. Der vorliegende Band soll dazu beitragen, diesen Mangel zu beseitigen. Er ist aus europäischer Perspektive geschrieben und versucht, wo immer sinnvoll möglich, amerikanische Erscheinungen durch Verweise auf vergleichbare Entwicklungen in Europa verständlich zu machen.
