Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Frank Adams (illustratore). Beautifully illustrated, vintage copy of "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" by Thomas Gray. 1931; The Medici Society; London. The book features a color frontispiece portrait of Gray, numerous full-page drawings (some of which are in color), and vignettes by Frank Adams. Gilt top page edges. The book is a famous 18th-century poem that reflects upon the inevitability of death, the contrast between the rich and the poor, and the desire for one's life to be remembered. Standing in a quiet rural graveyard at twilight, the speaker reflects on the lives of the ordinary, poor villagers buried there. Rather than mourning a famous historical figure, the poem uniquely commemorates the common, forgotten people of the world. Condition: Light soiling to the covers and spine. There are a couple small stains at the bottom half of the spine. Light foxing along the bottom edge of the front cover. Tiny cloth tears at 3 of the cover corner tips. There is a marginal crack at the front hinge between the end papers - despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly attached and is not shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only an occasional small, light smudges found here and there. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Inscription written ink dated 1951 written on the front end paper. Overall the book is in Good+ condition.
