Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. George Ade (1866 - 1944) was an extremely popular American humorist and newspaperman, whose genial satire was, in some ways, of the same nature as Mark Twain's. He satirized American culture and society, specifically the mid west and Chicago, which city was the base for his syndicat…ed newspaper articles. Ade's most famous work was "Fables in Slang" which popularized the use of vernacular speech in all of its singularities and crudities for use in literature. "Breaking Onto Society" is well representative of his work. The book is profusely illustrated with comic drawings by John McCutcheon, F. Holme (Frank Holme) and others. This is a 1904 edition, published by Harper and Brothers; it is likely the First Edition, Second Printing [with red binding, and no date on the title page, just on the copyright page]. It's a very nice specimen with but modest signs of wear from handling (Read our full condition report, provided below). TITLE : Breaking into Society AUTHOR : George Ade (1866 - 1944) ILLUSTRATIONS : Various ( John McCutcheon, Harry Smith, Frank Holme, et al) IMPRINT : Harper and Brothers PLACE : New York & London DATE : (1904) EDITION : Likely First Edition, Second Printing STATUS : This edition OP PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Illustrated trade hardcover; contains numerous line drawings, including frontispiece and decorated title page; 208 pages; 4 3/4" x 7 3/16"; dark red cloth binding with lettering and decorative embellishment stamped in black on spine and front board - rear board blank. Fore- and bottom - edges rough cut. CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which remains clean and presentable, with the following imperfections and particulars noted : EXTERIOR - Color on spine has faded; spine extremities are compressed; modest rub to joints;; front board faded along top edge, else color is strong; surface rub to front is mild; rear cover has a small, just visible damp stain at the foot of the cover next to the joint; cover's color is strong, and surface rub is mild; small, scattered nicking to board edges; corner tips are softly bumped; text block edges toned, else clean. BINDING - The book has obviously been read and thus is not as tight as when issued, opening easily and widely - however no leaves are detached or loose, and the whole remains solid, with no cracking. INTERIOR : Paper throughout is lightly toned; the most obvious thing is that the first reader separated the leaves somewhat carelessly, leaving the fore-edges somewhat ragged (this is a common thing found in old books which were issued with their leaves still joined at the edges). Else, the interior is clean and free of marking. There is one penciled owner's name at the top of the front free end-paper. (Bramley). All in all a nicely preserved copy. John McCutcheon, Harry Smith, John Holme & etc (illustratore).

Newman, of the Chicago Record-Herald, whose cartoons have appeared daily upon the front page of that paper for some time past. While his draftsmanship is of a high order, this talent is only secondary to his keen insight into the motives which govern men in political or social life, and his unique manner in delineating human frailties and making even the passions of men ridiculous. Thus his pen-drawings are more powerful than the word pictures of the writer could be, for they reach the humblest understanding and make their impression upon the minds of the wisest. It is in the talents of the cartoonists in modern journalism, among whom Mr. Newman has already won his spurs, that the greatest power of the press li es. Mr. Newman was born at Racine, Wisconsin, May 13. 1873. His parents moved to South Dakota when he was about nine years of age, taking the lad with them. After an absence of nine years the family returned to Racine and young Newman obtained employment in the machine shop of J. I. Case Company of that city. He had shown some aptitude for drawing, but had never had any particular training. Before the callous hands had become softened, in i8y6, he began work on the Chicago Journal, under Char les M. Peck. then, as now. the managing editor. In January, 1899, he accepted a position on the Chicago Record, continuing until its consolidation with the Times-Herald, where he now is. When with the Record, Mr. Newman undertook the making of cartoons during the absence of John T. McCutcheon in the Philippines, filling the position satisfactorily." -- from The Inland and American Printer and Lithographer, 1901. ; worn ; G. Book.

Aggiungi al carrelloviii, 154 pp. Illustrated. 12mo. 6-3/4" x 4-3/8" Ade "was an American writer, syndicated newspaper columnist, and playwright who gained national notoriety at the turn of the 20th century with his "Stories of the Streets and of the Town", a column that used street language and slang to describe daily life in Chicago, and a column… of his fables in slang, which were humorous stories that featured vernacular speech and the liberal use of capitalization in his characters' dialog. Ade's fables in slang gained him wealth and fame as an American humorist, as well as earning him the nickname of the "Aesop of Indiana". His notable early books include Artie (1896); Pink Marsh (1897); Fables in Slang (1900), the first in a series of books; and In Babel (1903), a collection of his short stories. . Ade also wrote scripts and had some of his fables and plays adapted into motion pictures. During the first quarter of the 20th century, Ade, along with Booth Tarkington, Meredith Nicholson, and James Whitcomb Riley helped to create a Golden Age of literature in Indiana." [Wiki] Here offered is a volume of more fables, 23 more to be exact, all of which are they're first appearance in book form. And while this Ade title is not particularly elusive, but in jacket. oh, decidely so! Book square & tight, VG+. A quite respectable VG example. Publisher's line-colored buckram with black stamping. Dull red topstain. Yellow dust jacket printed in black First Edition (Russo, p. 67; Smith A-96).

After Ade's newspaper columns went into syndication in 1900, he began writing plays. His first play produced for the Broadway stage was The Sultan of Sulu, a comic opera about the American military's efforts to assimilate natives of the Philippines into American culture. Written in 1901 with composer Nathaniel D. Mann and lyricist Alfred George Whathall, it was produced on Broadway in 1902. His other works for Broadway include Peggy from Paris (1903), a musical comedy; The County Chairman (1903), a piece about small-town politics; The Sho-Gun (1904), a musical set in Korea; and The College Widow (1904), a comedy about college life and American collegiate football. By way of approval, Ade signs this area boldly in pencil, adding "O.K." An unusual mini-biography.
