A very good+ copy in a very good- good dust jacket. Features numerous b/w photographs by Bob Adelman with text edited by Susan Hall. The dj's rear panel quotes four paragraphs from a review of the book by novelist and critic Ralph Ellison. The book's stirring photographic images, all shot between 1965 and 1970, chronicle the modest wealth and absolute poverty of the local white and African American residents of Wilcox County, Alabama. The text, most easily characterized as edited ramblings from assorted interviews, demonstrates the racism of the white community and the suspicion and fear of local African Americans. Bob Adelman (1930-2016) is best known for is role as photographer for the Congress of Racial Equality - aka CORE - during the 1960s which permitted access to leaders of the civil rights movement and led to memorable portrait photos of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., James Baldwin, among others.
