Here, in opposing the Buchanan administration's candidate for Speaker of the House, T. S. Bocock of Virginia, he defends himself as an anti-Lecompton Democrat, against charges of Party disloyalty, reviewing the major national issues of slavery, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and disunion, and argues that Stephen Douglas is the best candidate for President.
